Question is, when I want to play a movie or hear a soundtrack, I get a lot of background noise from Intervideo. The only way I can reduce that noise is to open the program, keep it open and mute it. In addition, I have trouble getting a decent volume on any movies I want to watch, and I suspect Intervideo is the culprit.

SusanAt risk of letting my stupidity show too much, if you mute it, then how do you hear your movie or soundtrack? BTW, do you mean sountrack as in a CD? I'm confused, I thought the program was for DVDs or at least that's all I use it for.
About the sound volume, yes, I have that same problem. I end up turning the volume on my computer up full, which I'm sure must annoy the people in the apartments above and below me. hehe!!! I'm glad that you have mentioned this, I thought I was going deaf. I'm happy to hear that it is the program. I have another DVD player on my PC, so I shall try that one and see if the sound is any better. Just in case you were wondering, I don't own a DVD player, wish I did.

I think it's smart not to have a DVD player if it's in your computer provided you have a good screen, which I do I have a plasma 17" I like it, although I have trouble with the brightness, it's just a bit bright no matter what colours I use and how I try to adjust brightness and contrast... about the Intervideo maybe we just have different versions, I use mine for my cable TV on computer, I don't even KNOW if it's got a DVD-playing feature, mind you I'm computer challenged so there you go.

SusanHmmmmmmmmm!!! And I didn't know you could use it for TV. I use a different software for TV on my computer. I use ATI. I have no volume problems with that at all, although I must call my cable provider because for some reason my local TV channels are all distorted, but I can get the US stations and the cable channels. Very weird indeed. My screen is not plasma but it will have to do because I don't have a separate TV, mine went kaput quite some time ago and I don't have the resources to do anything about it. :(

Check your monitor's documentation to see if you can change its color temperature, if you haven't already done so. Don't know about LCDs, but most CRTs come factory preset at 9300K, which is very bright white. Most have several predefined color temperature settings from which you can choose. The standard temperature used for prepress print work is 6500K ("daylight"). Note that any changes to color temperature will take a day or so to get used to.

I had WinDVD installed once upon a time, but PowerDVD is much better IMO. IIRC, I unregistered the iviaudio filters and installed a much better (and free) AC3 decoder. There are a lot of good freeware programs that give you much more flexibility with audio and video decoding, and provide you with real-time access to the DirectShow filter properties which you can tinker with.
