Hi Bobby,
I'm curious why you think we have stopped evolving.

I think it is just that evolution is sooooooooooo verrrrrrrrry slllllllllow so that we wouldn't notice any evolution in several human lifetimes.
It is also hard to figure the nature / nurture componant. So that humans are getting progressively taller, for example, though that may have more to do with better nutrition (in general) rather than evolution of genes.
There also isn't such a fight for existence as there once was. I mean, we don't compete for scarce resources quite the way we used to. And then medical advances deal with conditions that would have been selected against in the past.

after a certain period of time, we start to like our imperfections we see in each other and realize that if perfection is gained, we would no longer need each other to satisfy our desires, wants, and needs and then where would we be? A-sexual beings with perfect bodies, that are no longer attractive to each other, but simply a perfect form for functionality, highly intelligent individuals who no longer compete..
Oh what the heck, I am so full of shyte this morning........I stink.....I'm depressed, and I have to go to work.
Life sucks.........let's all evolve and end this dance of life so we can get on with the next one.

...then why are there still monkeys? Dearest Dreamer, how are you? I got your test e-mail--it seems to work well. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving here in the U.S. It celebrates the only peaceful time we've had with the Indians. Check with your mailman for a letter soon. What meds are you on today? They seem to change from day to day : ).
Take care and don't be a stranger.
Thou art in my thoughts,

if nutrition was actually BETTER, we'd only be getting taller- not taller and FATTER, too !!
Maybe there's another big freeze coming and we'll need the body fat???

Heh heh. We never used to get foods that were so rich in fats and sugars without lots of hard work. Now it is just too easy. I think that global warming means it is getting hotter, though I guess we would be fairly well prepared for an ice age :-)
I remember one of my psych lecturers used to keep on that 'it is not that we are evolving towards perfection... it is not so much that things are selected for, rather it is elimination of the unsuccessfull'. So we are the successes because we are still here. Noses like mine aren't around because they are perfect, they are around because they aren't bad enough to result in our elimination.

<<< Evolution is a simple process. There is nothing mystical and magical about evolving. We do it a little bit everyday.

I'm not sure we've stopped. Sometimes I feel like we're going backwards.
Anyone remember that band Devo? Devo was short for "de-evolution". Feels to me like "civilization" makes everyone more stessed. To me, needing to work at a job that you hate or a job that isn't fulfilling and your neighbors not talking to you because they are so overwhelmed with their own lives seem like a backwards process...not enough time for fun anymore.

why still an "eye for an eye"?
Why do my taxes pay for war?
why do we still break some of the 10 commandments:
thou shall not kill?
Why are we destroying the earth with pollution? Are we evolving ourselves right out of life?
Jai, scratching her head and wondering

apparently the rich have decided that more money is more important than human lives...
It is now money that is evolving...taking us all over with wars, et cetera which are SAID to be fought over religious or politicals beliefs.
It is only who has vs who wants on every warfront...
and we poor people are used as weapons against the other rich guys poor people.Let's see how many CEO's sons get drafted (yeah, right!) if they reinstate the US draft....

I like the idea of money evolving....
It seems to have a life of it's own.

I hope this is not too PBC a topic.

Some theorists say that not only do genes evolve; memes also evolve. Memes are 'good tricks' in the words of Daniel Dennett. They are such tricks as screwdrivers and religion and language. We don't need to reinvent the wheel in our lifetime, we are taught of the products of social and cultural evolution when we are children.
Memes are ideas that are transmitted down through the generations, we pass them on to our children as we pass our genes on to them.
Just something to think about...

We still are evolving. I know for a fact that even over the last century the proportion of people who do not even have wisdom teeth is increasing. Who needs to have the suckers out? Just don't grow them in the first place. Like me. ;-)

Strictly speaking nobody says we used to be monkeys. The notion is that monkeys and us have a common ancestor. There is a difference.
It is not like all the present day monkeys are all busily evolving to try to be like us. Thank god.

It all depends on how the term "evolved" is used. I was *not* using it in reference to biology. I was referring to emotional and social evolution.
By the way, considering how society is constructed I'm not really sure how free my will is...
