what happened to equality between the sexes?

Posted by alexandra_k on November 18, 2004, at 2:20:56

We fought for the right to vote
etc etc
Why doesn't anyone fight for women to get to go to war, just like the guys?
For women to have to go to war, just like the guys?
Sure a primary caregiver should get to stay at home
(and nobody should be forced to fight in my opinion)
But what happened to womans lib on this one?
Equality when it suits us, perhaps...

There are women fighting in Iraq right now. Do different countries have different policies?

I suspect that Alexandra is talking about the draft.

All I can say is that I'm glad I'm too old. Otherwise they would suit me up, hand me a gun and I'd shoot myself in the leg to NOT have to go.

Then again, I'm not allowed to touch a gun...mental illness will protect my leg from me!!!

Yeah, I was mostly getting at the draft. I do remember when I was at school though that we had a guy come and talk to us about the airforce. We no longer have one of those but anyway, he said that females weren't allowed to fly fighter planes in a war, only move supplies etc. I couldn't believe it.

But yeah, the draft.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I am a pacifist. I just think that it is kind of ironic that we want equality when it suits us.

And I'm just a throwback who wishes Steinem and the rest could have actually given us a choice. I don't have a choice anymore.

With so many women in the workforce, a job that one man used to do for $100,000.00/ yr is now being done by 4 people at $25,000.00. The conglomerate CEO's aren't going to take any pay cuts with the government telling them to ADD JOBS TO GET TAX CUTS! They take the tax cut, and offer four jobs at $25k instead of one at $100K- they also wind up paying less employer taxes by employing more people in lower tax brackets.

So where is my choce? Yes, I'm divorced. But when I was married I didn't get to stay home, keep house, raise my own child. NO, I had to work full time, keep house, and let some daycare facility raise my son because my husband didn't make enough.

You watch, we'll be included in the draft soon enough.

But I really bristle (in a no, you're not hurting my personal feelings, kind of way) that you suggest we get what we want...

Just being "in a debatable mood" sunny10- no offense meant.

No offence taken. Like I said, I am a pacifist so I don't think anybody should be drafted so personally I'd go for equality that way rather than the equality of everyone being drafted.

I just think that it is interesting that that one hasn't come up as a womens lib issue, that is all.

I agree, we still have a long way to go with respect to pay parity etc. Even the expectation that the female will keep house and the assumption that the female will be the primary caregiver even.

The fulla who ends up with me will be in for a bit of a shock there, I'm afraid.

But the pay differential really sucks. And there should be paid maternity leave, and there should be paid leave for the first year after birth (in my opinion).

Still, better than it was I guess.
