Addictive Behavior and Babble

Posted by AdaGrace on October 17, 2004, at 13:19:58

Does this site entice my addictive personality? It seems that anything I like to do takes over my mind and body and I can't seem to get enough of it. I have spent the past 2 hours reading posts on here. Is this healthy? I certainly hope so, because I don't want to give this up. I feel comfort here. Does that mean that some addictions are good for you? Hope so.

'Addiction' is a pejorative term. (This is an issue that has come up a lot on the med board when discussing benzodiazepines.) I could think of worse things you could be doing at the moment.

watching television
reading
having sex
eating
working
gambling
any type of time consumed on computering
pet cuddling
nose picking
pot smoking
fast driving
golfing
swearing
swearing
swearing
swearing
redundancy
wiseassedness
belching

I suppose if we look at a cross section of our societal habits, the lines between habit, compulsion, addiction, and just what we like to do kinda blur.

After all, I spend a couple hours or more here almost every day. I spend a couple hours or more socializing with my horses and/or dogs everyday. I spend several hours a day building my own home (as opposed to hiring it done).

Which of these is a harmful addiction?
Habit?
Compulsion?
Or just plain what I damned well please to do with my time?

I supposedly have an addictive personality, too, but I haven't seen hide nor hair of it since I allowed my compulsiveness a little space in my life, in between my habits and constructive pursuits.

If it's entertaining you, educating you, soothing you, giving you the out/pleasure/release/support/on&on that other healthy activities would, I'd say there's no problem.

Besides, it's ultimately your call what is healthy for you or not.

It would seem to be far less damaging than the compulsion I have with

Eating
Eating
Eating
Drinking
Drinking
Drinking
Swearing (Tends to come out in unapropriate places)
Self-Satisfaction (Not Working - I Can't Get NOOOOOOOOO)
Singing to the Radio in the Car(People sometimes stare at the stop light)

Picking the skin from my burn accident---Ewwwwww, did I type that out loud?

Did I say Eating?
Did I say Drinking?

You asked the question I have been contemplating asking for some time. I found this site around one month ago, I get on here and search everything. It is comforting and I realize my problems aren't so bad at times. Time fly's when I'm on here and I have actually been late to appts. because I can't get off. How's that? -L

Oh, yeah, I forgot that skin picking thing...
and all those myriad things we do or think that are pretty much just what we do or think and maybe we don't like them about ourselves or that we do them, which would, I suppose, indicate that perhaps we should curtail our participation in those certain types of things which our very doing distresses us, but then there are those which you and I and others have mentioned/thought of/do which lean heavily on the enjoyable, comforting, insomewayconstructiveforus side which may or may not be compulsions or addictions or bullshit or whatever other name we or others choose to assign them, but, being the self aware and seeking to help ourselves people we most likely are since we come here in the first place, don't really give a hoot what the Dxers think because it is, after all, in the end, our call.

I said to myself,
Oh, Yeah,
My addiction to run-on sentences when thoughts don't end, relevance in the stream of consciousness way I think - if I don't put it down right now the way it is running through my head, it, and its very substance, will be lost, forever.
