in the mouth a desert

Posted by zeugma on October 6, 2004, at 22:30:13

i have the driest mouth in the world, meds are destroying my teeth yet i become nauseous on nutrasweet or sorbitol or whatever they put in those sugarless sucking candies my appalled dentist told me to keep around, and i am up eating chocolate macadamia cookies which will not help this tooth decay situation. btw amy, if you read this, it cheered me up to see you mention me in your thread :) and i hope you are feeling ok and all:) you are in my thoughts

Do you drink a lot of water? Just water or selzter water, no sugar or other sweeteners?
Maybe you can plan to rinse your mouth every time you use the bathroom: empty bladder, rinse mouth.

hi, zeugy,

i have investigated your dry mouth problem. here is a quote:

"While there is no cure for dry mouth, you can get relief by drinking water, using saliva substitutes, using a humidifier or nasal spray, and by avoiding caffeine, alcohol and tobacco products."

the saliva substitute idea sounds interesting..i have no idea what that is, but maybe you could look into that? also, drinking water, but i'm sure you've tried that already, right? did you drink enough, though? i know some vocalists drink 16 glasses of water a day to keep their vocal cords hydrated (from the inside out-not just while the water is going down their throat)..it sounds like a lot, but you'd adjust to it..if they can do it, you can, too! i would definitely try this route for sure! (and your voice might take on a very nice tone in the process..:)) this could be key!

i'm not sure if the candies are going to help you much..but, maybe they do for you..but keep in mind that aspartame causes depression! so maybe if you want to do the candy route use a non-aspartame-containing candy. like splenda, maybe?

the site i looked at also said dry mouth frequently results from taking certain meds...so if you could change your med regimen maybe that would help, depending on what meds you're taking..i'd be happy to brainstorm with you on some good alternative meds for you to take if you like/need!! i'll post the web site for you later.

hope maybe i've been of some help, dude...

take care!
amy ;)

hi again!

did some more research, found some better info. forget what i said in the other post (i am totally new to this topic, sorry). instead, read this web site about what does and doesn't work:

http://www.naturalypure.com/DryMouthRelief2.htm

the products on this web site or a similar product to them bought wherever might be a good idea to try...

sorry i can't be more helpful!!..(forget the drinking water suggestion..sucking on something is the best way to alleviate this, it seems)

i tried! :-)

amy you are extremely helpful :) i am seeing my pdoc tomorrow, i am going to mention this product, since my dentist has warned me that i am seriously damaging my teeth with my meds and the suggestions she gave me made me sick (being literal for a moment :)) anyway i received one of the greatest panics of my life a few minutes ago, i had a terrible day today (you can see my post to dinah on the meds board) and i got myself out of my apt. just in time to get my nortriptyline refill... i have to take nortriptyline 3-4 hours before going to sleep or i have HORRIBLE experiences at sleep induction, i get pulsing shocks in my body and brain and then am wide awake with a dull headache that sometimes lasts through the next day and leaves me feeling 'wrong' for a week sometimes... until i read about narcolepsy on the net i was convinced i was having epileptic seizures when i fell asleep. i actually thought klonopin would make this problem go away as it is indicated for epilepsy... imagine my shock (literal again) when i tried to take a nice afternoon nap anxiety-free thanks to K. My symptoms have all been worsening anyway with age and increased stress at work, and Strattera has been tearing my stomach apart (plus it is EASILY the worst among the many meds i have sampled for the oral Sahara). Anyway I was shocked to find my nortrip refill empty! I called the pharmacy in a panic (they close at 7) and raced over dry-mouthed and out of breath, got a couple of days' worth of capsules, and now i plan to be safely asleep by 10:30.

To move on to more pleasant matters: I thought of you when I titled this thread, as I had read that you were a 'music lover' and music has been one of the few things that have gotten me through many wretched times. And I was so touched when you mentioned me in your thread, I was feeling absolutely awful last night (and I knew today would be a terrible day, as post-cataleptic days always are for me) and was strangely consoled by your casual mention of my name in your thread (I found it entertaining somehow :)). today was so terrible that i called my therapist to tell her i was thinking of quitting my job because the stress of working full-time with severe ADD and narcolepsy was killing me. Then I saw the empty bottle... the rest i have described.

My pdoc told me to take 30 mg Ritalin in the am, plus another 10 at noon. Hopefully that plus serious coffee consumption will get me through tomorrow. One day at a time. And music... currently the Fall's "The Light User Syndrome" is on full blast, and there are moments in it so ridiculous (like when the dogs bark before "Old White Train" comes on) that life seems worth sticking with in spite of everything.

thanks partlycloudy, yes i drink tons of water, all it does it cause me to have to run to the bathroom every hour to urinate- but temporary irrigation is better than none! hopefully stopping strattera again will mitigate this problem to some extent

i wrote that just before i read about dinah's loss. there is little more devastating than the loss of a dog...

Hi!
One more suggestion, there's a mouth rinse for dry mouth called Biotene. I don't know if it would help you or not. I've seen it at WalMart.

Good Luck!

hi, zeug,:)

hope my post wasn't too "over the top".:) i was trying to be funny but am wondering if everyone's going to think i'm psycho..oh well. (i've had a very positive mood change recently and my personality is becoming a bit too..buoyant..it comes off great in person, but i don't think it works too well for the internet. i'm not quite sure how i'm coming across..i'm not manic, just happy..i guess i'm not used to being happy and need to tone down my personality so i don't get obnoxious..ugh..why does everything have to be so complicated?

amy :)

hi amy,

i 'get' your sense of humor and it seems you get mine... some people communicate well on the internet, some don't, and i at least 'get' where you're coming from... so no problems here... and i'm happy to hear of your recent mood change :)

yes. I do know what you're talking about. if I had the energy, or if I get some, I would write a book called "Attunement." It would mostly be about art, but would touch on the subject of interpersonal understanding.

i am doing reasonably well. I am defying my dr.s injunction to avoid caffeine, as the Ritalin by itself is simply not enough and I have to do some work tonight. I felt hung over all day, though I haven't touched alcohol in over a year. I don't abuse alcohol, my central nervous system abuses me.

hope you're doing okay, bud!

I hope the same for you!

hi zeug,:)
yeah, i really am doing ok.:) thanx for asking. i'm hoping for a continuing positive chain of events to occur in my life, as both good and bad things usually seem to happen to me in a series. hope things are ok on your end..i was a little manic yesterday, but i've calmed down again today and feel good about life right now..to quote shakespeare, man can make a hell out of heaven, or a heaven out of hell..or something like that..i seem to be thinking a lot like shakespeare lately..too bad he came up with some of those quotes before i got the chance to...;)

take it easy, buddy! :)
