Writing a script on mental illness

Posted by delna on February 1, 2004, at 8:57:39

Hi all
I guess I've never posted to this board before- I usually post on the meds list.

Anyway I am writing a script on mental illness, for the stage. I'm just starting and wanted any ideas prople may have.

I'm here in India (visiting for a while) where mental illness isn't even taken seriously by the average person and as god's curse by others. I am writing partly to despell the myths people have and also to show that mental illness is as serious as any other illness. This is a highly taboo subject here but I really want to write something candid and realistic.

I do have my own insight into mental illness as I have had a long and 'colorful' psychiatric history. Now i am better- and finally correctly diagnosed as bipolar II.

So just wondering if anyone has any views or would be kind enough to share some ideas. It would be greatly apprecited.

Thanks
Delna

Hi Delna,
I think that it would be helpful to know a bit more about the type of script you are planning to write. I'm sure that we could all offer anecdotes, but with a bit more direction, we might be of more help. Are you planning a comedy, a compilation of people's problems, do you want to focus on a specific type of disorder, or are you looking for a hospital setting?
Just let us know, and you are bound to hear back from someone.
Good luck,
Dee.

That really sounds fascinating but also sounds like your script will need some magic to pull them in.

"I'm here in India (visiting for a while) where mental illness isn't even taken seriously by the average person and as god's curse by others."

You can name it the George W story. (That's humor folks. Not advocating anything. Not trying to be uncivil nor disrespectful)
Sorry delna, slight disclaimer there.

Okay, Ms Speilberg, here we go: The story would be set in Italy around a 5th generation master furniture maker/designer and his two sons who are taking more responsibility for the business. One son meets the depression trap at 28. The other sons wife is bipolar but has never been treated. Time is running out.
The father acts as if he doesn't know how his wonderful family can be so unhappy.
He flashes back to his misspent youth and realizes he too has suffered depression. He chose to drink his away....it hurt his craft and his family. He feels his actions put a 'spell' of sorts or a demon for his family to deal with.

Cut!!! I hope I hear you interviewed on NPR.

I find it interesting that mental illness is not taken seriously in India. I've met so many psychiatrists and psychiatric residents in the USA who are from India.

There's a lot of Americans that don't take it seriously....still.
