Resume ideas? Creative wordsmith wanted...

Posted by Wildflower on November 25, 2003, at 10:07:20

I've finally decided it's time to try to leave my current job. It's one of the sources of my rapidly deteriorating mental state.

Here's the scoop... I've been in my current position for 3.5 years and I just saw a position open with my previous employer whom I left to for more money. I don't really know anyone at my old company but I do want to make an impact with my cover letter reminding them that I used to work there. Short of saying HEY, REMEMBER ME???? does anyone have any ideas?

"...My previous employment with your company give me knowledge of your philosopies and procedures. I would very much like to come "home" again."

You can go into more detail about which philosopy or which procedure you think you could be most helpful with, since you already know it.

OR

"You could look forward to an abbreviated learning curve since I worked for your company for X number of years in the past."

Basically you want to say that it would be to their advantage to hire you instead of someone else because you already have experience there. Would it be the same position or a different one? Did you interact with the advertised position when you were there before?

Great suggestions! » fallsfall

It would be for a different position but within the same department. Therefore, I do know the hiring manager but I know I need to start with HR - they're very particular about that.

Fallsfall, those are terrific responses! Are you a career counselor? It sounds as if you have a lot of experience in this field, or perhaps you are just naturally good at it.

I was a manager of Software Engineers. For almost a full year, I did very little other than read resumes and interview people. For much of the rest of the time I spent at least 25% of my time doing that.

P.S. The most important thing is the "fit" between the candidate and the job/company. You can have a great candidate who doesn't fit a particular job at all, or a candidate who you really might not like, but who would do the job wonderfully. Pick the one who would do the job wonderfully. They will do a better job and be happier.
