1) go to http://www.google.com
2) enter your phone number in the search field
... like 444-234-6578 ...
3) click the search button
4) this will retrieve your name and address
5) click the 'Mapquest' button beside your address.... .... and there's a MAP TO YOUR HOUSE!
i thought this was another internet hoax when i got it ...
<quote>
The safety issues are obvious, and alarming. This is not a hoax;
Map Quest will put a star on your house on your street. In order to test whether your phone number is mapped, go to: http://www.google.com Type your phone number in the search bar with dashes (i.e. 555-555-1212) (dashes/spaces very important) and hit enter. This will divulge your name and address. You will see a link option to the right for Map Quest (click onit), which will use the address to provide a map to your home or place of business. If you want to BLOCK Google from divulging your private information, simply click on the telephone icon next to your phone number.
I removed my name, but it takes 48-hours. If you are unlisted in the phone book, you might not be in there, but it is a good idea just to check.
<unquote>... ... But this is NOT a hoax!
just a word to the wise folks,
protect yourself and your loved ones,

That's all well and good, and I understand the concern, but there are MANY ways of getting people's personal info online - not just through Google.
And if you don't find the info online, you can find it other ways. Most things are public record.

I put my number in, and for some reason, it came up in the wrong zip code, so you wouldn't be able to find my house.
But there *are* so many ways to get people's personal information. Like I said in another post. I can get access to people's marriage certificates, divorce records, birth certificates (whom they have fathered, too), and stuff like that from Lexis-Nexis, a legal search engine. It's all public, but it tells *your* story, you know?
I worked in the Baltimore City Jail system for many years as a criminal investigator, and have developed lots of ways to try and keep my personal whereabouts (house, etc.) private. Nothing's foolproof, but having a nonpublished (not just unlisted) phone number in the U.S. really helps. Of course, my house title is recorded at the county seat and all that....so if someone really wants to find me, they will. Which is why, even though I live in a very low-crime neighborhood, I pay extra for a home security system...
Knowledge is the best power, the best defense, against crime. Know everything you can and think *safe.*

Having a map does kind of tie it all together, but
you have been able to do this more or less for decades. It's called a "City Directory" which refs.
phone number to address. Any referance library desk
has one. "Inverse" phone number lookups have been on the internet for years, matching phone number to address.

hi,
i understand that we have lost our rights to privacy in any applicable sense ... ... ...
(and that was the case before our rights were attacked and eesentially shredded by the "PATRIOT Act" and it's dangerous prepetrators
... ... ... 'dangerous' in the sense of threatening our constitutional rights to individual freedoms ... ... )yet
i feel
as if the
increased facility, convenience and ease
with which Google is enabling the trespassing on our privacy,
has the effect of turning
such trespasses
into
a casual, implusive
whim
... ... available to the widest possible population of threats
...
... whereas, when one was going to have to exert some degree of research effort (however meager) into violating our privacy, this was a barrier ... albeit one that was all too low, before ...... and as a matter of principle we should feel obligated to oppose this erosion of our personal liberties as best we can ... ... and i feel that Google's new service enables the implusively or idly or opportunistically malicious to be more of a threat ... ...
... and those are the concerns about personal and family safety .... .... the situation as far as our privacy, for protection from intrusion by the government is too tragic for me to discuss civilly here ...
... and even if it is all hopeless and i am just tilting at the shadows of the windmills now long fallen
... ... i still tilt
... ... i will still tilt
... ... because i remember when i lived in a country where it did matter
... ... and i love that country
.... .... and i miss it ... ... verymuch
~ jim
p.s.
and
just in case i am too uncivilized ... ...

Don't worry too much about it. If someone has your unlisted number, they could always discover your address. I've done it myself, twenty years or so ago, at the public library. Can't recall why now......
Google just makes it easier. My therapist was telling me some therapists were freaking out about it, but that his name and address were always listed in the phone book anyway. The answer? Don't give out your phone number to anyone you don't want to have your address.
Now if you can do a look-up of email addresses and real life addresses, I'll be worried.
