Hi,
I am new on this forum, having come over from the Medication related forum. I am asking advice about a subject for which there may be no good answer but here goes.
I have been told about a person in our main office which is 1100 miles from here. I know him from several years ago when I used to visit that office frequently. He is about 50 yrs old, is a 20 yr plus government contractor employee at a management level. The stories I have been told recently are that his personal hygiene has deteriorated, having terrible BO, his office space area is dirtier and messier every day. He has become less and less social and more stand offish. He always has been an "odd duck" but this new trend is leaning toward mental illness and I think he needs help.
How do you approach this? Are there any steps that can be taken to help? These could be the symptoms of Schiz. or Bipolar. I am afraid if no one can reach him soon he will lose his job. Both he and his fellow employees are suffering.

If you were in his building I would say you could go to him and ask if everything is alright - that he seems less "organized" than he used to be, and that you are worried about him - is there anything you can do to help?
I think this won't work over 1100 miles. Who gave you this information, could they approach him?

This info did not come from his supervisor but someone else who now travels there occasionally. He is going up there in 2 weeks, he might be willing to do it or advise someone there as to what to do. Having M.I. in my own family has helped me to recognize the signs of it's onset. It has also made me want to help others with similar problems. Once a person has the right meds and therapy their chances of recovery are strong.

Funny,
There's a guy in our office who's exhibiting the same symptoms. He's become very mean and very unresponsive to others in the office, and he's obviously *not* showering during the week or washing/cleaning his clothing. Pretty bad.
He's a coworker, and was a casual friend, but he's frozen me out. I went to our mutual boss, who's actually a fairly compassionate guy. He spoke to the guy in question, and while that guy is not speaking to me still, he seems to be in better spirits and his personal hygiene has improved.
I think the person's immediate boss, unless a total jerk, would be the best to approach the guy...
Good luck.
Susan
