Lou goes to New York City

Posted by lou pilder on August 13, 2003, at 21:10:30

Frinds,
I just returned from New York City. I stayed in Hoboken, New Jersey, city of the legendary Frank Sinatra.
I took a ferry across the Hudson river and passed the Statue of Liberty. The collosal arm holding the torch of freedom was an awesome sight to see. What was in the minds of the ones that gave the stateue to The United States? Was it a gesture from the French to the United Staes for having the courage to stand up to tyrrrany? Was it a tribute to the Constitution of The United States that said that the majority rules, but that they can not take away the rights of the minority? Was it ia tribute to the United States for having a constitution that said that laws could not be applied to one and not others or be arbitrary, caprecious or discriminatory? Was it a symbol of a government of the people, for the people and by the people? Was it a great applause to freedom?
The giant arm was holding a giant torch. I have a deep conviction that the makers of the statue made it that way to inspire people to uphold freedom as the torch is upheld high, so that freedom shall not perish from the Earth.

Friends,
The giant statue faded away as i walked to lower Manhattan. Ther I saw a giant building clothed in black. It was being torn apart. It was next to an area cleared of previous buildings. It was ground zero. Therre were pictures all around depicting the horror of that monsterous event . There were people all around looking at what was not there anymore. Vendors were holding magazines for sale showing the planes hitting the buildings. But out of the ashes there was a man playing a trumpet to the tune from the musical, New York, New York, and people dropped coins in his trumpet case as they passed him. What a city.

Friends,
As I walked I found mysel on Wall Street. There was The New York Stock Exchange. And it had an enormous American Flag over it's front, as if to say that freedom shall not perish from this earth.
I walked to the docks from there to see The Brooklyn Bridge. A magnificant structure today as it was over a hundred years ago when it was constructed. There were crods of people on the water front and there was a lady dressed in a dress that was an American flag. She was singing, "God Bless America".
It is my deep conviction that she was singing that song from her heart, for she refused any money from those that passed her. What a city.

Friends,
I flagged a taxi and the cabbie asked me where I wanted to go. I told him that I would like to go to an Italian resturant. He said, "How about a hundred Itailian resturants?
I found myself in a place called."Little Italy." There were huge crowds of people walking up and down the streets and there were little resturants on the sidewalk, all Italian. Most were full and my craving for spaggetti increased. I took the first open table . Evryone was talking and laughing and being joyous. There must have been 1000 people pass me every few minuets. It was a joy to behold to see so many people joyous all at one time. What a city.

I trust your "vacation" was a good one. Your absence was noted. Glad you had a great time in New York--but you're still in Ohio right?

bobby,
Yes, I am back in Cincinnati. And the corn is as high as an elephant's eye.
I did have a good time in New York City and hope to return there soon. Are you from that area?

Glad you made it back home safe lou. No i'm not from the New york area---i'm from Georgia. My wife lived in New York when we first met and i had a great time up there--even with all those Yankees! :) I will most likely return to visit one day. There's so much to see--my god, you need a month just to scratch the surface.

about 1 hour north of Atlanta. If I may ask--what do you do for a living? Do you travel for business or pleasure? I lived in Florida for many years. Clearwater is nice.

bobby,
Would an hour north of Atlanta be near Dalton?
I am a retired teacher. I was visiting my daughter that lives in Hoboken, NJ and I have many friends throughout the United states and in France and England. I will be going to Hull this year.

I do have a uncle who is in the carpet business in Dalton. Dalton is in the northwest part of Georgia and i live towards the northeast. My mother is a retired school teacher-- as are two of her sisters. It's a tough field, but rewarding.
