I've used the personals. Six dates with one, two so far with the other. I recommend emailing for a while before you meet.

I just thought it would be easier, because I could email for a while and not see someone new right away.

Did anything good come from your experience?

Sorry you're not feeling so hot today.

I had posted to you about an hour and a half ago but I don't know where it went. I guess maybe I forgot to click something.

Actually, my sister is going to Cambodia and suggested that I take her cat for a few months. Although, I'm not really sure why she thinks that would be a better idea than having someone closer to her take her cat. I live on the opposite coast from her. But I'm thinking about it. It would be good to see what it's like.

Okay, some people would say I'm not a true vegetarian because I do eat seafood. I don't like meat, except for poultry, which I can live without. I don't care much about what people say about me eating fish, because it's all just a label. Who really cares if these elite vegetarians think I'm not one?

I go to the library for the same reasons. I used to spend a lot of time looking at books but not so much lately.

> Has anyone ever tried the personalls on line? Are they safe?

I have. I think they're pretty safe. It hasn't been too successful for me but it's kinda fun anyway. Also, now you have to pay for most of them if you want to be able to contact people... or you can just look, and hope people who paid will contact you, which is what I do.

These were the first (and only) dates I have had since leaving my husband 4 years ago. Since I'm so depressed, I don't get out much to meet people. This gave me a way to find people in my area who had "similar interests" (to me that means that they don't smoke, don't drink a lot). The first one and I had a good time, and it was as a result of that that I felt that there might be some hope for a relationship with someone in the future. The second emailed me at the beginning of a really hard 4 month period for my depression - the timing was awful. But we exchanged emails for a while (and I always delayed answering to stretch out the emal part of the relationship so we wouldn't have to meet), and did meet. We had a fine time - probably not a forever relationship. I had to cancel our last date because I was changing therapists and couldn't put coherent sentances together. Hopefully we'll get together soon, though.

It worked for me...

I just started the personal ad thing, and of course I would not put my picture out there. A couple people have emailed but I am still worried about what I have heard.....

That this is a place where XXX sites go to get to know a person then after a while ask them to call a 1-900 to talk to them. It just seems like some of the pictures are just to much like that.

Has anyone heard of that?

Maybe, but I would like to make a few suggestions:

match.com, udate.com

I guess on any site there could be people who would end up wanting you to call a 900 number, but I've never run into that. I think most people are serious.

Funny - I'm single and looking for a nice guy. Where are they??? (with the exception of Lostsailor!!!)

I've done the internet personals thing several times - had a date in college with a guy who was great via email but not great in person - a little scary really. Then a date with a guy shortly after college who was also great via email and okay in person but we just didn't click.

I posted an ad on match.com about a year or so ago and got a good number of responses but was going through a down time at that point, so I never responded. A friend of mine in Charlotte met her boyfriend that way, though.

Have any of you tried Speed Dating? I did it once in Charlotte with no luck and I've done it once here with a little luck. It's pretty enjoyable and low key and not too expensive. I went out with a guy I met here through the event several times, but he stopped calling, until just recently when he popped up again after several weeks, but by now I've decided I'm no longer interested. I haven't called him back and don't know whether I will or not. To be honest, I've already deleted his cell number, so I'm not sure I COULD call him back even if I wanted to. Oh well. :-b

Never tried speed dating... I think it would be too much for me. I would get overwhelmed and freak out... But that is just my personality...

I can just see me trying that...

There is this quite girl in the corner, just watching. The whistle blows and people go rushing everywhere. Hi... my name is... What do you do.. and so on. Whistle blows and scares me. Suddently I am bumbarded with another person... same questions. My question.. who are you again. Whistle and so on...

Until this quite girl stands up and starts screaming, crying and shaking... and leaves in a tivy....

That would be me!

Sorry for the change in topic...

But I don't know what to talk about tonight. Hmmm. What should I talk about? Maybe my recent desire to drink. Maybe how I'm not sure about her, but we've already talked about that and I don't really know what else to say about it. Maybe how southerners are wimps and northerners are tough (when it comes to weather)! just kidding...

Could be an interesting subject.

Yeah, we are, but worse in the winter!!! I'm sure you've noticed how terrible people around here drive when there's a little bit of precipitation!!! oh my...

Many times, when I don't know what I want to talk about, something comes out that I wasn't expecting, and it turns into a good thing.

Have you talked to her about this most recent downturn in your mood and the thoughts that accompany it?

I agree, I have been using the online dating sites and so far the men I have met have all been fine, really nice - so I think on those sites most are genuine - I always do the emailing thing and I always try to get their home phone numbers as well ( just in case - cautious me)....nothing has really come of any of them - went out with one guy for 3 months,...others I have just stayed friends with and have become good friends - so it's a bonus and it broadens who you know and if one night you feel like going to a movie, you can always call them. I think online dating is fine - but get to know them as much as possible before meeting them.

Christine
PS I think Match.com is quite good too and I also don't pay - I wait for them to pay.

Sorry... didn't mean to bring up a tough topic. Maybe you've mentioned a fiance or something and that's why I thought that. I'm sure your woman is out there, just waiting to be found ;).

Are you really a sailor, by the way?

Oh yeah. I was somewhat aghast hearing about all of the accidents because of RAIN! And schools being cancelled for a millimeter of snow. I know it has a lot to do with the lack of plowing equiptment and salt like we have in the north. But still.

In college, my school had not cancelled classes for 17 years due to weather. In March of my senior year, they cancelled one day. It was stunning. Probably 5 feet of snow.

Yeah, I lived in W.Va. for a while growing up and it took a flood that nearly wiped out my town to cancel school.

UNC actually had a really good record for not cancelling classes until recently. When I was a student the rumor was they had not cancelled classes in a really long time and that the last time they cancelled it was due to war. I dunno. My sophomore year (I think - might have been junior year...) we had a pretty big snowstorm right as folks were coming back to school for the spring semester. I drove from the coast back and it started snowing about 45 minutes after I left home and the rest of my drive, which would have normally taken about 2.5 hours, took me the rest of the day due to snow and crazy drivers, and the fact that I was driving a Chevette! ha! My roommate didn't make it back in time for classes to start because they had closed part of the interstate and her mom wouldn't let her drive. I had nothing to eat in my room and the stores here were all closed. It sucked. I made it to class the first day, as they didn't cancel them, but on day two it iced over and people started complaining so they made classes 'optional', meaning that no one went. Oh - the heat in the dorms, controlled by the physical plant on campus, weren't on yet, so I was freezing with no food. Joy.

I'm thankful that they finally have enough sense to close the university when the roads around here get bad as folks don't know how to drive on icy/snowy roads and we don't have the resources to get them cleared as quickly as needed, though they are getting better. However, I'll be glad when they realize that it's really really stupid to make state employees make up work time when the university is closed!!! It's not our fault it's closed, why should we have to make up the time or take it as vacation??? ARGH!!!!!! Sorry, that's another story...

Funny - except for the northern panhandle, I pretty much consider WV as the south! Same with MD and DC. When I was in DC last year in AmeriCorps, I thought of it as more southern than northern, but the people from the south would say stuff like "up here in the north" and was thinking "this is Not the north!" I don't know. I'm starting to realize how significant all this is for me. I guess it's different, you know, from growing up there and then moving here, which isn't even as southern as some places!

Freezing with no food? Sounds like the ice storm...
