Anyone out there to talk to??

Posted by Felicity on June 5, 2003, at 10:25:53

Just wondering if there's anyone out there that I can talk to...

You can try to talk to me - I warn you I'm a bit stuporous though ;)

Thanks. I don't even know where to start. I'm just down.

I've always felt that I've had a bit of a "mental" problem. I've terribly shy, scared of everything and very anxious. Recently, I had a blow to my world that completely shook everything up and I found myself depressed. I went to my regular doc and he put me on Lexapro. But, I'm not seeing much change. I'm VERY moody, extremely high one minute then the next I just want to cry. I wish this stupid medicine would do more. I don't know if I need more or maybe it's making things worse. I had my first real panic attack while I was on the med.

I don't know what to do...

How long have you been on the Lexapro and what dosage?

My experience with antidepressants is that sometimes they do make me more moody and crabby at the beginning, depending on which drug it is. Some are worse than others.

Perhaps it might help to see a psychiatrist, a doctor who (hopefully!!) is more experienced with antidepressants than GPs.

I've been on it for a week at 10 mg per day. I just need to feel more from it. Right after I take it I feel an overall calmness, but then it's gone and it's like I never took it.

Unfortunately, it takes 3-4 weeks for an antidepressant to start working. This applies to all of them :( The side effects start right away though!

I know it's really hard, but just try to hang in there and give it time to start working.

Do you have symptoms other than the anxiety-related ones? Things like insomnia, sleeping too much, no appetite, eating too much, so forth.

Yeah, I have absolutely no appetite...which is fine because I want to lose weight. I'm also tired a lot.

Did your dr discuss other drugs with you, or just suggest Lexapro?

If you haven't been there, maybe you would want to check out the Psycho-Babble meds group. I want to caution you though, don't get discouraged by all the problems with side effects you hear. People who are doing well with their medication usually aren't posting there :) And it's still very early in your treatment, so you may find that Lexapro is the right drug for you. If it doesn't work, there are many other drugs you can try.

I'm very shy myself, and I don't know what I would do without the internet, voice mail, and phone menus! They do make life somewhat easier.

I know exactly what you mean!! Everytime I make a call, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they won't answer and I'll just be able to leave a message!

My doc just suggested Lexapro and told me to come back in 4 weeks and let him know how I'm doing.

I have been over on the other board and I was terrified about what might happen when I started taking the Lex, but so far I haven't had any major side effects.

Thanks so much for your help.

I'm laughing so hard - I always chant in my head "please don't answer please don't answer" when I call. It helps to know you're not the only one.

I hope you don't get too scared by what you read on the other board. There are millions of people taking these drugs and doing well. And at one week, it's a very encouraging sign that you haven't had trouble with side effects. And a lot of the s/efx go away after a while. I really hope that the Lexapro helps you.

Well, I have to go for the afternoon, but if you find yourself in trouble, I suggest you distract yourself by thinking up other ways we can avoid direct contact with other people!

I'll be back later today - I hope you're feeling a little better :)

How many of us do you think there are out there? Anyway, pleased to meet other people from my planet. :)

Also, I just think it's interesting--the post is "Anyone out there to talk to?" and talks about fear of anyone to talk to. My predicament exactly.

I think there are millions of us. Just think what we could do if we all banded together.... watch out society!

It is a paradox that we - trying to think of a word and all I come up with is shysters!!! (Odd, I think a shy person would be less likely than others to scam people.) Anyway, that we can talk to strangers online. I remember when the internet was first becoming popular, there were pundits worrying about how this is going to isolate people, it's a terrible thing. But here I am, and others are too, being social in a way we never could in person. Interesting.

Hi there! It's good to hear from you again. I'm sorry you weren't doing too well the last few days - I hope you're feeling a bit (whoops, I typed big at first - maybe I should leave it :)better now.

Yes, online is a good start. I talk to way more people online than I probably would in a lifetime of "real" life. Even if I weren't terrified of talking to other people (lol), the internet would be great. There's so much research you can do.

And even if there's no medication or therapy that can help you, it is reassuring to know that there are others going through exactly the same thing as you are. Especially if it seems like something rare or unusual in "real" life - not around here! I started having OCD when I was a kid, and even through a lot of adulthood I thought I was just the oddest ball, as it were. To come here and read about so many others struggling with the same thing, makes me feel better about myself, even if I can't change my OCD.

But I would never use the internet "match" making stuff!
