Help for post crying bout headache?

Posted by jane d on April 9, 2003, at 21:10:57

Where else could I ask this?

It's almost a day later and my face, presumably sinuses, still hurts. Hot showers, cold water and antihistamines did nothing. The only thing that helped a bit was the application of warm furry cat but she's had enough of me for now. Any suggestions or do I just need to wait this out?

COLD washcloth (keep rinsing in cold water and wringing out) against forehead

AT SAME TIME

WARM washcloth along back of neck/base of skull. Keep washcloth as hot as you can tolerate it. Continue this application of cold up top and warm below for about 10-15 minutes. Headache should be gone.

If not then get in touch with me by IM and I'll give you acupressure points that are quite effective.

Sounds like it will work.

So sorry, jane, for whatever made you cry that long.
(((jane)))

Crying affects me the same way. My head hurts for days, contacts fog up, sinuses plug, it's like I have a cold for 2-4 days. Maybe all that histimine makes us vulnerable.

Warm tea and Vitamin C couldn't hurt you, either, I bet.

Be good to yourself.

Jane,

I wish I could do something to help. Haven't talked to you in a long time... If you want to email me, just use my IM name with yahoo, and I'll get it. I cried Monday night too, in the shower. Next day looked like hell, but not the splitting headache you got.

Sorry I'm late with this. For a really tough headache, take 3 or 4 Extra-Strength Excedrin with a big glass of Coke or Mountain Dew. The caffeine makes the aspirin work better, and the carbonation dumps the medicine into your bloodstream faster.

Hey Doc Alii!

Thanks and an extra thanks for tracking me down on IM so I could get your answer sooner. The headache was gone before morning and I slept beautifully. I tried both the hot and cold and the pressure point so I'm not sure which one helped or how much was contributed by the cat who deigned to associate with me again. If there's a next time I'll try first one then the other in the spirit of scientific inquiry.

Bozeman,

Thanks for the kind thoughts. I knew I'd get practical suggestions here but I was rally shocked at the kind thoughts on this thread. Foolishly shocked because I've seen other people get that kindness again and again but somehow I don't expect it for myself. Pleasant shock too.

Now a request for a basic biology lesson. Where does the histamine come in? Is it from the crying? Or something else.

Jane,
who obviously wasn't taking very good notes in biology class or over on the med board.

Wendy,
Thank you for the good wishes. Luckily my down mood was just temporary and I even knew that at the time which makes a world of difference as I know you know. I was just feeling sorry for myself at being mostly, but not entirely, better, that it didn't happen sooner, that I am only mostly, but not entirely, free of side effects etc. And of course I was really feeling guilty that I wasn't grateful for all of those almosts and resentful that I had to feel guilty. I think in the end my mood improved because I just couldn't keep track of it all any more (those minor cognitive side effects of course. :) .

I'm sorry to hear you were having a bad day too and I hope it turned out to be as transient as mine. Aren't showers wonderful things? And makeup and visine. Was it anything you want to talk about here or elsewhere?

Noa,

I never know whether to answer posts collectively and risk confusion, or answer each one separately and fill up server space and perhaps force you to read the same thing you mayb have already read in an earlier post. Here comes the possible repetition. I wasn't really that bad this time and it passed quickly. For some reason my tears don't necessarily signal my lowest moods.

Thanks for the sympathy. It really awes me and I'm sure that I will carry it with me as a little extra protection next time. (oh darn, now I have to feel guilty about the "nobody loves me" thoughts too.) Seriously, perhaps that little nagging voice of reality/guilt IS the protection.

Jane
PS. I've been benefiting from your advice for years when you thought you were posting to other people.

One thing that is very helpful is a nasal douche..I know, I know. You can but a Neti Pot at a healthfood store, mix up a little saltwater in the pot. In the shower, tilt your head back and pour 1/2 the saltwater in each nostril. A lot of people gross out when they hear this but I gross out when there's someone with snot head around me.
I just use a little creamer container thingamajig.
Put about a teaspoon of salt in 'not too warm' water, stir it up, jump in the shower and Neti away. It's a good as anything I've tried.

Let's all go Neti now.

Thanks Phil,
I've actually heard of those things before so I guess I'll have to try it as soon as I get up the nerve. That may take a little while. I looked at the picture in your link and it looks like a sort of scary activity for the uncoordinated person.

Allow me to just interject:

I use this stuff, URL below (I don't buy it here, I just wanted to show you a pic), mixed with HOT water, about half and half, with a nasal douche that is much less scary-looking than the one in the photo you show, although I'm sure yours works fine...

http://www.hocks.com/htm/oral/3825106.htm

The gizmo I use doesn't have to be used in the shower. It's a little pink plastic tube (about 5") with a turned-up end (this goes in your nostril) and the other end of the tube has a hole in it (like a bong). I will try to find a picture of it somewhere and send the URL.

How to:
Fill the tube half with the Alkalol and half with hot hot water (it'll still end up being only tepid-warm, cuz the Alkalol is room temp). Stand over the sink, cover the hole on the end, stuck the other end over your nostril, don't push, while plugging the other one, and tip your head back, going "guk, guk, guk," like Popeye, out loud, in the back of your throat. As soon as you feel the liquid go down to the roof of your mouth, tip forward over the sink, unplug the nostril, and let it all run out. Repeat on the other side, and then BLOW the s___ out of your nose, and you're clear. Or else I repeat it on both sides, if I'm really stuffed up. It really really helps when I have a sinus headache and/or am badly stuffed up, which is fairly often. Accupuncture helped my allergies, but it's muy expensivo...

I heartily recommend the fine art of nasal douching, and yes, it takes practice, and yes, some may go down the back of your throat, but it's mentholated (not too much), so it's kind of pleasurable.

The stuff smells divine, and it's really CHEAP.

OK, any questions (from anyone but Phil, who already knows how :-] ) on technique?

Nurse Wendy

ps: In a pinch, in the shower, cup your hands and let them fill with as hot water as you can stand, and snort the water up into your nostrils, but not too much or you'll get that weird feeling like at the pool when you inhale water by mistake. Then blow the s___ out. Remember: practice makes perfect.

I am so disgusted!!...mainly that I don't have a witty one to add to your humourous posts.

Keep us laughing. Thanks.

Oh yeah can't forget to thank Phil for dragging the ol' neti pot out of the natural food store aisles and into the mainstream consciousness. ;)
