How April Fools Day got its name:
The Julian calendar was introduced in Rome in 46 B.C. by Julius Caesar. In 1582, that calendar was replaced by the Gregorian one, sponsored by Pope Gregory XIII. It's the one used now by most of the world.
By the old calendar, the first day of the year was April 1. When it was changed, many people refused to begin their new year's celebrations on January 1st and still celebrated New Year's Day on April 1st. They became known as the April Fools.
Just some more useless facts to stuff in your brains in place of the important ones, like where you put your keys.

The shrinter--was that invented by the former ceo's of A. Andersen and Enron, by any chance? Or maybe Fawn Hall (ok, who here remembers who Fawn Hall was--younger folks and Brits, sorry--you're at a disadvantage here).

Not unless that was a trick question.
This was in the 1980s, long before I saw my first shredder, but I thought even that long ago someone of North's status would have a shredder in his office.
I have a feeling that I'm wrong this time and you know a more interesting answer. Please tell.

I'm sure they had a shredder in the office, but they wanted to not leave any evidence behind, so she smuggled the documents out in her underwear!

Well I don't know how sober they are now, but they said they were on Entertainment Tonight not too long ago (so it must be true, right?). Danny Sugarmen had some affiliation with The Doors way back when and has made a living off of it--writing a couple of books and such.
