Traded anxiety for depression.

Posted by Tabitha on March 4, 2003, at 2:25:07

I've been on AD + neurontin combo for years, and I quit the neurontin. I'm now on just 1/2 dose celexa. I feel different, but not exactly worse, and not exactly better. A bit less anxious, a bit more depressed. I expected the opposite.

Depression feels like a vacation compared to anxiety.

My sleep isn't as deep but it's easier to get up in the AM. On weekends I make up the hours, just like I used to do before meds.

I'm losing weight without trying. The neurontin gave me that fake appetite that's more compulsion to eat than hunger.

Therapy seems less valuable, since it was mostly a big band-aid for my anxiety.

I don't know if this is better or not. I kind of like it though.

And have always been amazed at how rarely they go together. Like one protects you from the other or something.

Do you think you can tolerate this long term? Or is it just a nice rest...

**I totally agree. I'd rather be depressed than anxious any day of the week. If only that were the case right now. I'm glad the anxiety has eased for you Tabi.

***If you like it, it must be better. :)
I hope things only go up from here.

Lots of positive things happening, Tabby Cat. You're just not used to it is all. Maybe the depression is a little bit (I was gonna say psychological, but that would be stupid!) from the emptiness you're feeling as a result of not having to feel anxious? Sometimes we miss the things we're used to, even though they're not necessarily good things.

It sounds like a dream to be almost med free.

It also sounds like maybe you have a touch of survivor's guilt. Does that make sense?

Hugs. Take care.

Tabitha,
I prefer plain old depression over anxiety any day. Though sometimes I think maybe I "should" be anxious. Like somehow if I'm relaxed I'm copping out, even though I don't accomplish anything when I'm twisted into knots and shaking.
Maybe, thats part of it too? Like you dont' think its okay to just be.
Just a thought

Thanks for all your kind thoughts. It's so true, mild depression is way better than medium anxiety. I don't know what the heck happened. The change is disorienting.

What next?

Sorry tab to hear your not at your best. I agree, totally , about low depression over , for me at least, seemingly endless worring. Maybe it's time for a new med or the video store clerk!!

I sometimes can "see" it happening--anxiety builds, then depression comes in to turn it off. When coming out of bad depression, feel anxiety building. I do wonder what euthymia really feels like!

what is 'euthymia'? I thought I knew all the buzzwords but I'm going to have to google this one

I had no idea there was a word for normal!

There's another word for it... 'normothymia'. I'm gonna work those into my response sometime when someone asks how I am.

Normothymia? Wow, never heard of it. Hey, we could have fun with this---make up new variants with the root--"thymia".

How about:

wackothymia?

Your turn, Tab!

Sounds good, but I'd spell it Eurhythymic, I think. Let's see--normal, rhythmic mood?
