Weather back east is UNREAL!!!

Posted by IsoM on March 3, 2003, at 14:46:21

Here, I'm basking in balmy sunny weather & everyone back east is freezing their buns off! I couldn't believe how bad it is. But I'm not rubbing in our warm weather. I spent part of my adult life on the prairies where the temperatures sometimes dipped to -40 (F or C, same number) & that was *without* the wind chill. I remember the bone-chilling cold. If you didn't cover your face, you could feel the inside of your notrils freeze. Our furnace broke down one winter night that was record cold. Thank goodness, we had an old cook wood stove to fall back on.

I'm feeling bad for all of you back east & wish I could send some warmth your way. While people may be able to keep protected, please be aware of any pets who may normally stay outside. I was horrified at the cats & small dogs I'd see on the prairies who had their ears frozen & fall off. Smaller short-haired dogs & cats could easily freeze to death outside - shelter or not. Before I knew what even brief cold could do, I let my kitty outside once during the day for about 5 minutes. When she came in, the tips of her ears were limp - the beginning of frost bite. Never again would I let her out when it was real cold.

On the new this noon, I heard that Toronto may even turn off the hydro on rotating short shifts due to power shortages. They're asking everyone to use only needed power around late afternnon/early evening. They're asking people to turn off unneeded lights, not to run clothes dryer/washer or dishwashers then.

I'm not so sure we're getting global warming with what Man's done to the environment. More like seriously screwed up weather world wide.

Make hot toddies or hot chocolate everyone & stay indoors! (And here Victoria had its annual flowering count that's done at this time every spring - over 3 billion blooms around the city.)

thanks for the warm wishes Iso.
It was minus 47 with the windchill when i woke up this morning. Yee haw. The wind was kicking up so big last night that I went out at 11 pm and just stood in the middle of the street just enjoying the "rush" I love wind no matter what it's temperature. I had a great time trying to hold myself still against the push of the wind and blowing snow.
It was so cool (well, cold) hehehe

Yeah, wind - I love it. But not at THOSE temperatures. Brrr! With all the huge trees & mountainous & hilly terrain here, we don't get much wind. If I lived close to the ocean, I would but...

I believe wind is healing in some way. I've watched people & we can't help but wanting to look at moving objects. The way everyone gathered around a campfire stares at the dancing flames, or even with a commerical muted, people continue to stare at the TV. Our eyes are rested & our minds relax with watching something move. Even when it's still out, there's birds that fly by, clouds drift -sometimes slow but often quickly. Leaves turn & twist or blow about, bugs buzz - it somehow feels right that our environment around us should move.

I think we suffer from a sensory deprivation indoors when nothing moves. We see but there's no change. It's like sounds. A constant sound is irritating but varied sounds are relaxing on the whole, if not too loud or grating. Man! We sure can screw up the world/environment we live in - no wonder we don't function properly.

P.S. How long did you stand in the street enjoying the wind? Bet if the neighbours saw you, they'd be sure you're crazy! ^_*
I have this mental pix of you with arms outstretched, head thrown back, just taking it all in while the wind whips about you. Very nice!

Dear ISoM:
When you said Victoria did you mean Victoria BC??
My grandparents lived in Port Angeles, WA and when I was growing up we took the ferry to BC every summer. I have such fond memories of Victoria, the Totem Pole, wax museum and high tea at the Emporus Hotel. The flowers there are sooo beautiful. I'm now in Chicago and the cold & snow you were talking about in your post. It is snowing 3-6" tonight. Next time you go out, if you are in Victoria BC, will you do me a favor and blow a kiss in the air for me?? It has ben 20+ years since I have been there and I would like to think that I had the chance to kiss it hello again. Thanks for your warm thoughts.
Libby

Isn't it strange, but I've never been to Victoria itself. It's so expensive crossing the strait by ferry & I don't know any one over there, but I'll send a kiss in that direction. I live near Vancouver & it's just as balmy here. I couldn't imagine living anywhere else - except maybe Sweden in high summer for all the sunshine & daylight hours!

It's going to be July before all the snow melts back east!

J:

It's supposed to get up to a balmy 37 degF tomorrow, though. Hey, get out the shorts & sandals...

Seriously, though, I noticed tonight (I went out twice in this -4 deg F weather) that when you're walking briskly, breathing in this intensely frigid air, your mouth a little open to draw in breath, your front teeth start to hurt... sort of how they might feel if you held a huge mouthful of ice cream up against them for a few moments. I mean, it really hurts!

I hope you are well, you sound good. I am so glad someone has some nice weather >somewhere< on the North American continent. It's good you are able to see how wonderful your surroundings are, and truly appreciate life as it is -- right now. That's a gift...

I think I would love living where you live...

fondly,
Wendy

****that's basically what I looked like. :) I stayed out there for about a half an hour, until I couldn't feel my cheeks anymore. Wind and water are my 'rechargers" If I lived near the ocean, I'd be a very happy person I think.
take care IsoM, enjoy that early spring
