Beardy, can you help me here?

Posted by Greg on August 1, 2002, at 14:32:19

Beardy,

Because your reputation as a grammatical genius proceeds you, I'd like to ask for your assistance in settling a bet. Which is the more grammatically correct?

Work in progress?

or,

Work in process?

I actually have a $20 bet on this, your help would be appreciated. I promise to be honest about which one I chose when you tell me.

Greg

At least you didn't take the obvious path and say I was beyond help... :)

Greg:

I've never heard anyone say something is a work in process, but I can't find any evidence that it is incorrect. The common phrase is "work in progress." Because it is used so often, it is considered a cliche. I prefer: I'm still working on it!

I hope the precedes will go to me, then.

beardy : )>

P.S. This is a sneaky way of getting me to post.

I'm surely not the one to go to for that (nm) » Greg

Beardy,

No sneaky intentions intended....

Here's the scenario. I'm setting up a directory on the company's server where the engineering staff can store their documents they are currently work on. I've been a Document Control Specialist for about 7 years and when I've setup a directory like this in the past I've always called it "Work in Process". A co-worker says that's incorrect and should be "Work in Progress". I was hoping with your knowledge of proper grammer you could set us straight.

So I assume that your call would be for Work in Progress then? That's okay, it wouldn't hurt me to do without lunch for a week...as long as I have my coffee :)

Thanks,
Greg

As a language person: I would have said "progress" because that is what you usually hear. However, your scenario really seems to suggest "process" as the more appropriately descriptive word since you are developing the format.
