summer holidays for whom (IM)

Just read an article in an older issue, back a few months, of Reader's Digest about children and freedom. The just of it was how we were able to run wild until supper time versus now. It compared todays youth to prisoners in jail. But what about the victorian age and further back when the buddy system was used for supervision and safety?

And what about all those people who are employed in educating our youth? How are you enjoying your summer?

And, in olden days, no child labor laws, young children in workhouses 12 hours per day, pittance for pay, becoming ill, not enough to eat.

It often seems comparisons to the past take place through rose-colored glasses. I understand the temptation, but a lot of times people seem to forget (esp. Reader's Digest) that during that time we had rampant racism, undereducated youth, corruption in government and industry (no regulation, greed gone amok), individuality was extremely suspect, etc.
