Do you have any superstitions?

Posted by mist on June 17, 2002, at 9:36:20

Mine is that I can never use font size 13. Even if it's the best size for a document I'm working on I'm afraid to use it.

Nope...none whatsoever - really (nm) » mist

I don't know that mine really counts as a superstition since I don't rationally believe 13 is unlucky--it's more a feeling I get when I try to use it. A holdover from childhood I think.
(Another sign that the ***subconcious*** does exist!)

Many; I believe in angels/ghosts. (Come from a Puerto Rican background; everyone in my family has seen something! Think we should all be on Haldol?)

I think I also believe in reincarnation, lately.

I don't know why I don't have any quirks (at least in THAT way) but nothing bothers me that causes me to act in a certain manner like that. Perhaps it's because, despite other weaknesses, I have no obsessive-compulsive tendencies. Doesn't what you describe for yourself sound like it may be a very minor, but not overly bothersome, compulsion?

It's one area that I'm rather clueless in as I've never experienced something similar. And yes, I do think I'm blessed not to be bothered by it. Telling someone to ignore something like that is probably easier to say than do.

Bookgurl,

The idea of believing in angels/ghosts appeals to me (especially ghosts—angels I believed in as a kid—Catholic—less exciting. LOL.) Sometimes I just suspend disbelief about these things (life's more interesting that way) even though I don't fully believe they exist. I know others who believe in reincarnation. Doesn't seem that farfetched although I guess I have enough trouble keeping up with this life that I usually prefer not to think about what happens after it!

IsoM,

I think it may be OCD-istic at least (actually I probably have some other minor tendencies that could possibly be as well, but then sometimes I think I have every other disorder in the book too so who knows). But this one I thought of as superstitious (as in maybe I would have it even without any OCD tendencies) because of the widely held superstition about the number 13 which I think somehow got ingrained in my mind as a kid. But maybe it's still an OCD-type thing.

It is kind of a pain because 13 is a good font size for many things I work on (for one thing it's easier for me to read than smaller or larger ones). But I don't know that OCD type treatment would work because I suspect it's a deeper, culturally ingrained belief that goes beyond the condition of my mind.

If you have Office XP, use 12.5 font :-) (nm) » mist

I do use 12.5. Not quite 13 but good. (nm) » IsoM

I've always thought it strange that I don't have any superstitions since my mother is very superstitious. Also, I'm an actor and I don't believe in saying "Break a leg" over "Good luck" (it's suppose to bring bad luck) And no one should ever utter "Macbeth" in a theatre, did you know that? Old theatre superstition. I think it's absurd.

Yes....yellow lighters.

Chances are, if you're walking around with a yellow lighter that means you're a smoker, which is bad karma right there. Especially in California.
My son has always had an aversion to yellow lighters, swearing that they're bad luck. To prove to him how fruit that was, I bought a yellow lighter and told him I was bringing it with me to work.
I've been working since I was seventeen, and the day I brought that yellow lighter to work was the worst day I've ever had. Everything, absolutely everything went wrong, and I was extremely upset by the time I got in the car to go home. A few weeks before, I had bought a cassette tape that was supposed to de-stress you with sublimal messages, but I had never listened to it. I tore off the wrapper and stuck it in the cassette player, which promptly ate the cassette-completely destroyed it. I rolled down the window and threw the yellow lighter out of the car. Won't touch one now.

Wow. Interesting story. Glad I don't own a yellow lighter. :) I would like to operate on logic about my superstition (and get rid of it) but when I hear stories like this I think it's safer to stick to my irrational fears.
