If you had LOTS of money what would you do?

Posted by CtrlAlt n Del on June 2, 2002, at 7:29:12

Hmmm can it buy happiness?
I'd definately move but mainly I think I'd get a good hypnotherapist to iron out embedded emotional creases with me nasty memories and be taught to hypnotise myself..
Then maybe.....

If I go to that place--that place where I fanticize about what I'd do with money, especially since I am crazy about sprucing up my environment, painting and decorating every eensy surface, and having lots of space--I will stay there all day, and I have important things to do (like sit by the pool at the club that my parents pay for!).

I used to fantasize about winning lots of money and how much better my life would be.

But can money get me the one thing I want more than anything?????? I want to be mentally well. I don't want any more depression, bpd or suicidal thoughts.

Can money buy me that???

You're probably right on the theory that money does not buy happiness. HOWEVER I'm pretty well convinced that if I didn't work, I might not be totally well and never think about suicide, but i'd definitely be better. I'd spend alot of time gardening; I'd get rid of all the worthless clutter in my house; I'd go visit my mother more so I didn't feel as neglectful, and I'd travel to alot of interesting places, and I'd develop interests that I don't even know I have right now.

...and of course I'd support the goal of world peace. (:

No doubt I'd live a better life with more money, not having to worry about finances and being able to do things that I can only imagine in my dreams now. And before I was depressed, I would daydream about all the wonderful ways my life could be so much better but even though I BARELY scrimp by (and sometimes don't) to pay my bills every month, it still wouldn't mean that much to me without being mentally well. If I was mentally well my mind would not be wacky anymore, maybe I could love myself and I would still have all the people in my life that I have drove away due to my depression and mood swings. All the money in the world can't give me back what I have lost.

And I HAVE been very financially secure with my first husband. Of course he battered me and I was suicidal, but I did have money. So yes to mentally well is as they say priceless- Judy

I would try to parlay it (i.e. lose it) in a manic gambling spree.

If I didn't have to worry about my spending and could afford it I would hire someone to come in and help clean, do yard work, etc. My freezer would be stocked with frozen pizzas and I would have someone help prepare meals and/or do shopping. I would buy a new bed, new bikes, and some more clothes for me.

I would also make donations for books to my children's school for their library and perhaps even hire someone to go in and make it a great place that the children would want to go and browse and read there.

I would also have a nurse or some type of therapist come in for my dad, a tutor for the children, and a massage therapist for the whole family. I would build my mother her dream house and send tickets to my brother's family so they could visi and my uncle's family too.

Plus I would phone my long-distance friends and talk until I fell asleep and not worry about the cost.

Luckily I'm relatively young (26) and in college, so I can envision NOT being totally poor someday. (I live in a housing co-op, have a car that needs to be repaired, and have $40 in my checking acct. right now.)

I want a barn-like house in the country with a rusty old truck outside, a fiberglass speedboat, 2 good kayaks, a nice computer, a million books. Oh -- and I want to go to the Naropa Institute to study writing.

With LOTS and LOTS of money, I would start a nonprofit Writer's and artist's colony on the same land as my barn-like house. There'd be little one-room cabins for the writers and artists on the land, I'd have hippies come in and do some organic farming on some of our space (for income), and set myself up as the development director. Ahhh.

:D

Okay! I'll move there (hope the weather's nice) & start my garden plans. I used to be a hippie - love-ins & all. But I love gardening/horticulture/botany from a totally natural viewpoint using the science that's inherent in all nature. Oooo! I get to develop new cultivars at last! I want to develop fuschias into an edible, tasty little fruit-bearing plant with gorgeous flowers (& yes, fuschia gone to seed ARE edible, just not overly tasty).

Bookgurl,

That's my fantasy exactly!! Has been for years of pondering how I'd spend my Lotto money. Be the director of an artist/writer's colony on a huge piece of land (on a lake or an ocean-front for the kayaks).

The gardens are also on my list! So I wish I knew more about you... What do you do for a living now? Where do you come from? (you don't have to answer, I'm trying not to pry, but it feels like my twin just appeared...!)

Best,

Wendy

Hey Wendy --

I just started kayaking last year! I love it, too.

Right now I'm a "returning adult" college student. I major in Writing. I spent several years studying English (lit) and Spanish. I've done work on a small literary magazine and at a small publishing house in the past; OCD and anxiety sort of derailed my 'career' for a while.
Though I'm fighting my way back. (Refuse to succumb.)

I live in Madison, WI, in a housing cooperative. I have a girlfriend and sometimes perform at an all-women's spoken word event.

Someday I think I'd like to live in Oregon or New Mexico. I'm interested in studying cognitive linguistics or going to writing school.

Thinking about the future -- even material things I'd like to own -- motivates me to keep working through my challenges.

What do you do?

Here's something that I cut out of some newspaper article years ago and keep on the bulletin board in my kitchen:

The saying in the oil-rich Murchison family of Texas is, "Money is like manure. Pile it up and it stinks like hell, but spread it around and it does a lot of good."

"If you have money," Elizabeth Meyer said "you know that money can't cure fundamental human loneliness. If you don't have it, you still have the hope and illusion that it can.

People who don't have it can delude themselves. That's why the wealthy have this incredible despair. They have it all, and they know how little it really is."

This makes it sound as if, all things considered, the prudent person given a choice would not elect to be burdened with wealth. But, for all his research, Sedgewick is unwilling to go that far. "It's useful" he acknowledged, "to have enough money to feel safe, because the world is a perilous place".

Hey, isn't there a women's art colony you can intern at in upstate New York?

Also, have you heard of Arcosanti? I visited there on my recent vacation to Arizona and thought it kicked butt. . .check it out.
