To other non-football fans!

Posted by fi on May 31, 2002, at 8:47:56

Sorry, 'soccer' to those of you in US?

Just to say that if anyone else is not looking forward to the many hours of World Cup football, and missing programmes which are useful distractions during your week, you are not alone!

I also face the dubious delights of my bedroom being under the living room of a flat owned by 2 football fanatics with satellite TV (and no living room carpet...) so will be woken in the wee small hours when matches start in the morning in Japan/ N Korea..

Those of us in UK also have several *more* days of interminable programmes about the Queen (tho we are getting an extra bank holiday out of the Jubilee!)

I know there are much worse things people are coping with (and vastly more worrying things going on in the world).

Just wanted to share sympathies with anyone else facing this minor irritation!

I was in Venice the day Italy played in the World Cup tournament at this time in 1994. It was fascinating. I'd never watched before, I've never watched since, and I didn't watch that day. It was hard to get good restaurant service, but it was great to see everyone so pumped!

Heeeyyyy! We know what football is! Was married to a Brit after all (such a mistake!)... And I am a fan, but I didn't think you'd mind my jumping in here...

I love football, played it in high school, was captain of my team! Yes, moi! And also played three times a week in grad school, was on three different leagues, just so I could get out of my head, too much reading, not enough physical stuff when you're a grad student.

But have you seen the schedules? The game times here are 5:30 am (EST), or 2:30, or 7, I think. Something like that, so don't quote me. All in the wee morning hours, anyway, which sucks.

Yeah, Nikki, France lost! Cool! The Brits hate France so much, it's in the blood, don't you think? I personally hate the German team, but that's just IMHO (hope I don't get a PBC!)

best,

Wendy

England Vs Germany are always HUGE events... theres so much history there and the rivalry is enormous... last time we played them we beat them 5 -1 though which was amazing and the press are STILL raving on about (it was about a year ago)

I'm not a sports fan. Prefer to avoid them altogether.

What premier league team do you root for? Although not particularly attuned to the ways of British football, I have very good friends in Liverpool, so I do know who Michael Owen is (and how cute he is) and i also know better than to say anything good about Man U.

I dont mind what other people do/follow, its just rather wearing when it takes over the TV!

Mind you, I have a Cunning Plan for tomorrow- I can go to the supermarket when the England match is on, and I would guess it will be rather quieter than usual! Will serve me right it loads of other non-footie fans end up having the same idea, of course...!

By the way, when I said I prefer to avoid them I was referring to sports, not sports fans. I just don't like having to listen to games blaring on TV, etc. and I wouldn't want my regular routine disrupted by them.

Your plan sounds like a good one—the supermarket and other public places will probably be quieter at that time.

*laughing* I actually support Man U!! *grins* I was a season ticket holder there for 5 years and used to follow them home and away.. took ALOT of money and time!!
My husband supports Liverpool which can make for interesting times in out house!!!

Even bought myself a little English Flag yesterday!!! I'm addicted to the World Cup already, though I know England will end up breaking my heart!!! ;)

I agree- each to their own, but not imposed on me!

The funny thing about going to the supermarket during the match was that although the roads were much quieter, the supermarket was nearly as busy as usual. I know there are lots of women who *do* like football, but it was interesting to see that nearly all the shoppers were women, instead of the usual mix!
