Just Started Trileptal or Weight Loss

Posted by NancyLee on May 13, 2002, at 7:12:49

I am Bi-Polar and on Depakote, Welbutrin and trying to get off Clonapin.
I was prescribed Trileptal to lose weight as I have gained about 150 pounds since starting treatment a few years ago.
I took my first dose this morning so it will be intersting to me to see if it does cut down on my appetite.
I see people posting that they didn't eat meat anymore. My probem hasbeen with the carbs. Anyone with experience with this?

I've never heard of this medication. Is it new? Can you give some info on it, ie: side effects, expectations, how much it costs, etc.

I wish you much success with your weight loss. Please keep us posted. I will be very interested to see how you make out with it.

I just started Trileptal like Depakote it is really an anti seizure drug for epilepsy that was found to work well on mental health patients for mood disorders like mine. The only problem was that Depakote and Lithium make you extremely hungry all the time. You crave carbohydrates the most and feel tired so as you can probably guess, weight gain can ensue. My Psych nurse just started me on this medication to see if I can lose weight........I read some info on the net about side effects there are a lot of them none really serious I think but no loss of appetite was recorded. Some people were stating that they couldnt eat meat anymore. They all reported a lot of weight loss over a period of a few months. One woman had to take her son off of it after he lost too much weight.
One good thing about this is you dont have to have your blood monitered to see what the levels are in your bloodstream so that is good. As with Depakote they check you often at first because it can cause liver damage. I was told to work my way on this medication slowly and take it twice a day or as tolerated. So I hope I can take it well without the side effects.........except for the good one.........I'll keep you informed.......one thing I will say is it really gives you a dry mouth yuk.......bye for now........peace

Could you please point me in the right direction to where on the net you read about different people's experiences with weight loss and not being able to eat meat etc. Is there a specific reason for the meat?? And does it inhibit your cravings for carbs?

Thanks

I went and found on this site dated January 28, 2001 a few postings from people that said they were repulsed by meat and had a taste change went they went off of the Trileptal. I went to a site called Trileptal Consumer Info which downloaded an acrobat reader book of 28 pages with all kinds of info about this medication. It did show that people had a change in their taste. Also it can cause birth defects it also will interfere with hormonal contraceptives, besides epilepsy it is used to treat Trgeminal Neuralgia (facial pain) its real name is oxcarbazepine. So I guess the whole weight thing is why I was given the pill. Yesterday I found more info on the weightloss aspect of it, but today went back and cant remember where exactly it was. I have aol so I just typed in keyword trileptal and it went to all kinds of sites. It led me here actually so you can research also if you are interested. That is all I really know for now have a good day bye!

Yes Trileptal is the new generation of drug one generation away from Tegretol. I dont know the side effects of Tegretol but the medical community seemed to be very pleased with this one because there is no liver damage with this one. But there have been incidence of renal problems. They never wrote renal failure but problems makes one give pause......peace
