If anyone has had experience with EMDR for trauma processing I would be most appreciative if you could share some of that here.
I'm asking for the good and the bad. How did it help? Or did it make things worse?
all ears,
alii

I went through that last summer. It's an old therapy treatment with mixed results. It really didn't do much for me. The gist of it is that rapid eye movement has something to do with addressing traumatic events, and that this process can help to "erase" those memories. There is a good deal of info on the WEB about it, including a page about the "creator" of the process.Bottom line: don't think it will hurt you, and it COULD possible benefit you. Hope that helps.

Dear Alii,
My therapist thought it might be helpful for me after an auto accident. I don't think it did any good, but didn't do any harm either (that I'm aware of). Subsequently I did some extended research and came to the conclusion that it's in the realm of psuedo-science. Some people may gain something, but who's to say it's not the placebo effect? It's bit difficult to do double blind studies. All you have to lose is your money (quote from my daughter doing researh on magnetic therapy in an alternative medicine class).
You might want to check out quwack (sp?) watch to see what they have to say. Haven't been there in ages. For me, cognitive restructuring actually helps more, and I can do that myself. It also helps me to focus as much as possible on the positive things in the present and the future. Yes, I still have flashbacks, on other issues that I've never talked to anyone about, but they've diminished over the years.
Hope this helps,
Chris A.

depending on the trauma, i've heard that it's helpful when there are memories that are too painful to address with plain "talk" therapy. however, i have also been told that people with dissociative issues- particularly dissociative identity disorder- find EMDR agitating and disruptive. it's also disruptive, apparently and understandably, to those dealing with abuse who aren't comfortable enough with the therapist. just passing on what others have told me. i haven't done it myself.
