reassurance needed, please...

Posted by ELA on March 25, 2002, at 9:24:59

Hi Guys,

I'm coming up to the end of my treatment on warfarin (pills to thin my blood following the clots in my lungs). I'm getting more and more stressed and worried about what might happen when I do finish it. Can't help thinking that as soon as it stops and my blood is back to its normal thickness, I'm going to get more clots and they'll kill me this time.

I know this is silly and I may as well walk around worried that I'm going to get run over by a bus every time I go out but I can't help it. It's really getting me down at the moment.

I have talked about it with my therapist and pyschiatrist but they all dismiss it. So what do I do??????!!!

Just feeling stupid again as I know that it's a silly thing to worry about really.

Emma.

Emma;
For the past month I have been trying to tell of my experiance where I was led to the truth and the truth set me free and I was able to overcome. In one of my posts I told of what I was revealed about life and that life was only the begginning and that I feared no evil as I walked through the valley of the shadow of death. The valley is at all times in our lives, we are in that valley now, all of us, for we do not know when the angel of death will pay a visit to us.
But you can have the angel of death PASSOVER you. There is reassurance as you have asked for. I am trying to complete my expeiance on this board and will finish the 6th and 7th Gates on the Road to the Crown of Life.

Emma, did you know that ginko biloba is a blood thinner? How about using that after the warfarin is stopped. Even plain Aspirin thins the blood.

And I would really suggest buying natural source (not synthetic) vitamin E & taking 400-800 I.U. daily with a meal. Natural vitamin E is D-alpha tocopherol, not DL-alpha. It will do wonders for blood clotting problems & is even recognised by the medical community. I'm surprised no doctor has recommended it yet.

Emma;
Before you take Ginko, I want you to know that there is a growing body of evidence that indicates that Ginko is contraindicated in your condition WITHOUT YOUR DOCTORS APPROVAL. If ISO's reccommmendation to you is to take Ginko without your doctor's approval, then she is wrong and has given you very bad advise. If you want the reserch on Ginko that I have, I will be glad to mail it to you or fax it to you. Ginko can be very dangerous for people that have your condition.

Educate me, Lou! I wouldn't take it myself as I don't want my blood to clot less. But I'm not aware of what you're saying & will be happy to learn. Want to post a link ot two for me to read? Thank you, Lou. I'd never want to give bad advice & would want someone to step in & tell them so. Just something I've never heard before.

ISO;
When we talk about herbs, most people think that they are harmless, for they are "natural". Well, opium is "natural". Hallucinogenic mushrooms are "natural". there are many beeries that are poisonous. Now when it comes to Ginko, this herb has powerfull effects on the blood. Interacting with asperin can be quite dangerous to a person that is taking Ginko without their doctor's knowledge. Anyone taking ANY MEDICATION SHOULD ALWAYS ALERT THEIR DR. AS TO WHAT HERBS THEY ARE TAKING, for there are interactions with them and the medications.

I realise that herbs can be very powerful & I will caution someone if they plan to take them, but ginkgo biloba IS recommended for thrombosis. No way did I mean to combine ginkgo with Aspirin - that would increase the effects - just pointing out some options for Emma. Ginkgo biloba doesn't increase brain power like it's sometimes touted as, but will dilate blood vessels & increase blood flow IF their circulation is actually poor. Many people think their circulation is poor when the real problem is lack of physical activity.

Of course, herbs need to be used wisely. As an example, both tomatoes & tobacco belong to the same family, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't eat tomatoes. There are potentially good foods to be found in the deadly nightshade family besides tomatoes - peppers, eggplants, potatoes. A person needs to use common sense & moderation with ALL things - foods, herbs, medications, life-style, you name it.

But I do agree with you. If a person uses herbal remedies, their doctor should know about it - whether thy're taking medications or not. One person almost bled to death during an operation because she'd been taking large anmounts (not a good thing) of ginkgo biloba & never told anyone.

I thought you meant that there were specific studies linking thrombosis with ginkgo as bad. I checked some more resources & found that even sometimes patients' doctors will recommend ginkgo for thrombosis.

I recommend http://www.gnc.com/health_notes/Index/Herb_Drugix.htm for interested people to check out any possible interactions with herbs & medications. It's referenced by bona fide doctors & researchers. And http://www.gnc.com/health_notes/Index/Herb.htm to learn more about herbs & which ones MAY benefit a person.

ISO;
The issue in discusssion is that the person under a doctor's care should get the doctor's appproval to take an herbal suppliment. However, even people that are not under a Dr's care should investugate the herb that they plan to take. Look at Ma Hung.(ephreda)

Ideally, you need a doctor to explain to you why you dont need it anymore- maybe the GP? You are asking a question anyone would ask in your situation. You need (and deserve) a factual reason why you needed the warfarin before and dont need it now.

I havent read all the other posts, but would say that its important to take care, and work with your doctor(s) if possible. There are other things which 'thin blood', like aspirin, but if there was still a reason why you needed a blood thinner, then your doctor would be prescribing you one.

Also, most drugs (and many herbal drugs and even some vitamins at high doses), can have side effects and interactions with other medicines. So its much easier not to get into adding things if possible, and if you do, let your doctor know (including herbal medicines) to reduce the risk of interactions.

But basically, it all comes back to finding out why its OK not to have the warfarin now. Its great news that they dont think you need it anymore, but they need to share their reasoning with you.

Good luck.

Fi
