Movies and/or videos?

Posted by Bekka H. on March 22, 2002, at 20:49:18

Hi. Has anyone seen any good movies lately, either in the theater or on video?

Hi Bekka,

What kind of movies do you like?
I like movies with interesting character development. I'm tired of default action/car blow-up, etc.

Yesterday I watched "Planes,Trains, and Automobiles" one of my old time favorites for cheering me up.

This is a fabulous weird dream movie that came out about ten or more years ago. It stars Griffin Dunne, Rosanna Arquette, and Terri Garr (plus a women whose name is, I think, Linda Fiorentino?). (Cheech and Chong are in it, too!) I've seen it a handful of times. But I don't know anyone who doesn't like it. It's bizarre.

LA Story - Steve Martin at his best. Must see
House of Games - little known nugget. GOOD film . About a psychiatrist with an expertise in OCD who becomes obsessed with the workings of con men.

House of Games Steve Martin's REAL best

I love House of Games (own it, too!). David Mammet's movies are always so "play" like--the characters sort of shouting their lines at each other, rather than concentrating on nuances like facial expression and soft voices. It works here.

I beg to differ, John; Spanish Prisoner is Steve Martin's best.

Hate to start a favorite movie thread, but:

The Usual Suspects
American Beauty
Sling Blade
The Game
Bladerunner
Titus
Dogma
Diva
City of Women
Plan 9 From Outer Space.

Remember those fright movies, well I saw one that had a bit of a story to it, and the whole time I kept thinking get out of there: "Geepers Creepers."

The next one, if you get motion sickness like I do from watching something with a background moving be prepared. "Training Day" is tense and a shot em up type show, bad vs good.

Ah, that Steve Martin can do no wrong in my eyes...but then that belongs in the "celebrity crush" thread...

Character development...."The Player" is what comes to mind for me- esp. if you're in to directing and how movies "look"...it's about a movie exec (Tim Robbins) who starts getting threats from a young screenwriter...he takes the law into his own hands and...anyway, it's awesome. It's really a black comedy/thriller/satire about Hollywood greed and power...

For laughs- "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" is a hoot- oop- there's my Steve Martin bias showing again...

Last theatre I visited was all too public to go back by myself, it's been almost a year and I miss my movies but I just can't go alone again if I'm gonna walk out onto a battlefield, and me without my AK47.
I should have known it would upset me, first I cried while reading the newspaper review, but being the dumbell I am, went by myself to the fancy, upscale, richest theatre in town, The Arbor, and ended up sobbing, hiccuping, snorting, alone, raw, no kleenex, unable to stand, people having to step around me to leave the aisle, old ladies walking by shouting THAT POOR CHILD HER HEART MUST BE BREAKING then going outside bawling in front of 4 lines of people, no, make that 4 lines of ADVERSARIES, whispering, no, HISSING, "Wonder what she saw?" NONE OF YR DAMN BUSINESS, THAT'S WHAT," stumblin into Barnes and Noble, lost love nipping at my heels, in the magazine section, now, looking for reviews, a book or newspaper flyer, some confirmation that it was indeed a sad movie and crying is allowed, in some cases encouraged, sorry, no luck.

IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE,

I really loved this flic. A group of liberal, Master's students take their summer vacation in a mountain cabin. Every Sunday evening they invite a stranger over for conversation about society and politics. The plot takes a very dark turn, but it is a dark comedy not a gory thriller. The film builds up a lot of psychological tension. It really grabs a hold of you.

Hi John,

Well, ordinarily I like all kinds of movies, but lately I want to see comedies in order to get my mind off my depression, etc. My favorites are:

Analyze This
My Cousin Vinny
The Birdcage
Down and Out in Beverly Hills
Roxanne

Someone told me that Robert DeNiro and Billy Crystal are working on a sequel to "Analyze This." The title is supposed to be "Analyze That."
I will go to Blockbuster soon to see whether they have "Planes, Trains and Automobiles." That sounds good!

trouble!!!!! I assume you are talking about Wong Kar-Wai's "In the Mood for Love"? Have you seen his other films? "Fallen Angels" is probably my favourite, but I haven't seen the one you saw yet. Wong's direction is superb in all of his films, a true genius. Were you upset that it made you cry? I'm one of those people who can't cry when depressed, so if a film can provoke that reaction for me, I'm usually quite happy.

I don't have much interest at this time in my life to see this film; however, I came across this link concerning the movie.

"Planes, Trains and Automobiles."
Highly recommended!

I also love "LA Story".

I like Mike Myer films too.
"So I Married an Axe Murderer" was really funny but not well publicized.

Have Fun,
John

Hi John,

I recommended a good movie guide a few posts down, but I think it got lost. If you like movies as much as I do, an excellent and fairly inexpensive book on movies/videos is "Videohound's Golden Movie Retriever." A new edition comes out each year. It covers every movie imaginable, reviews each movie, rates it, etc.

Yes, I have seen "So I Married an Axe Murderer." I thought it was hilarious, and I wondered why I hadn't heard more about it when it came out. Mike Myers is terrific.

Hey,
christophre,
the very same, this is the only film of his I've seen, man was it stylish. I felt classy just watchin it. But no I don't mind crying in private, but cannot bear to do it in public, especially when no one else in the theatre is crying, like there's something weak in me, which only makes me cry louder. Anyway this is the most romantic film I have ever seen, Shakespeare-what could-have-been-but-shallnot-be-romantic, nothing else I've seen comes close. Let me know if you see it.
