It's not as if we can arm wrestle for Dr. Bob.
Line forms to the right. I'll start first.
Upper middle class woman moralist, plain in features, about 50 lb. overweight. 40 years old. Doesn't like to be touched. Enjoys listening to hymns, watching Spongebob Squarepants, and rocking in the bottom of the closet. Heroes include Abraham Lincoln, Moses, William Churchill, and William Marshall of England. Relatively happily married with one child. Moderate OCD, mild cyclothymia. Don Quixote complex leads to frequently trying to help chronologically favored ladies across the street, whether they wish to cross the street or not.
Well, after reviewing that resume, I have to say "Never mind....".
Next?
(Sorry Dr. Bob. It just seemed that some levity was needed on the board at the moment.)

Dinah, you are hilarious!
Me: 24 year-old riches-to-rags girl with tendencies to alternately sob and laugh hysterically. heroes: charles bukowski, janis joplin, gandhi, bob dylan, joan baez, anais nin. can practice the amazing feat of knocking out a liter of wine in an hour while pretending to do yoga. bruised/scabbed legs due to drunken falling and 12 years shaving-legs experience being at its best, fair. tend to have dry skin and usually sport obscenely bright toenails. am sometimes so tired and disillusioned that when i run into acquaintances i say, "I'm sorry, i'm too tired right now to talk," and run off. display all of my respectable novels and hide my Cosmo and People mags and self-help books in a closet. picky eater and on probation. pick the dead skin off my feet when no one is looking. very happy with boyfriend. trying to quit shoplifting.
how's about a Saturday night?

Sar - Are you a janis joplin wannabe? (no southern comfort eh?) Bob Dylan and Janis Joplin were 2 of my real favorites along with Jim Morrison, whom I did see live. Unfortunately only 1 is still with us. I'm insanely jealous that you got to go to a Bob Dylan concert.

> MairMair,
you make me laugh...i'm nothing like janis joplin in real life! i only wish that i could wail like her. if i could sing "farewell song" or "flower in the sun" just like her, i don't think i'd be depressed anymore. or "summertime"...
i'll have to try southern comfort though... ;)
i just have oldskool taste when it comes to music, for the most part...though lots of new stuff too...have you heard of Ryan Adams (NOT "Bryan." Ryan.)? he's been called "the next Bob Dylan"...aside from being lead singer of Whiskeytown, he does solo albums as well, and they are heartbreakingly good.
from what i've read, Janis lived an incredibly unstable life...i'm not that wild...i admire her 'cos she had such a rebellious spirit, fabulous wardrobe, and she went to the same college as me. (yeh, she went to college!)
love,
sar

I watched the Grammys last night with my 14 year old daughter who was very grossed out by Bob Dylan. (Unfortunately, the boy bands are more her speed these days) I have to say that I was disappointed. The lyrics were pretty unintelligible (poorly articulated) and the cowboy hats were distracting. Do you suppose this is the Austin influence? Did he do any of his old stuff in the concert you went to?

> MairMair,
i would imagine that the pretty-boy popstars are more your daughter's speed right now--poor you! for a good 5-6 years we were without boybands and then wham, your daughter becomes a teenager. (they do have a certain amount of humor, though--check out the sexual innuendoes in the dance movements that the teens probably only catch subliminally...team fulla boys up there pumping their crotches at each other...and your daughter was bothered by Bob??? :) (i didn't like Bob until about a year or two ago.)
the cowboy hat, i think, is part of this trend that's been going on for a couple of years but is just now gittin really big in rockerville...have you seen Madonna in her little cowboy shirts and cowboy hats with oldstyle jeans? or Justin Timberlake (ask your daughter) in his bent old cowboy hat? i think that in Bob's case (this is just my guess) that his fancy cowboy look is not only in keeping with the times, but also a nod to his country contemporaries (Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson--all the folks who've known that country really is cool, except when bastardized by popsters).
in Austin no one really wears cowboy hats, except maybe silly sorority girls who wear leopard print ones, or real cowboys, real old-style texans. i've been trotting about all day and everyone is wearing wool beanies, peacoats, and polarfleece.
Bob hasn't aged well and now headlines as "Bob Dylan and His Band"--no longer a singular folksy act. from what i know, he holds court alternating white wine with Guinness (only a very steel-tummied practiced drinker could pull that off) and smoked or still smokes rather heavily...aside from that, he went through an extremely debilitating depression.
i happened to be in the third row though, and could see his happy shyly smug little face and skinny legs...most of what he performed was from *Love and Theft* (his new album), but he also did "Blowin' in the Wind" ; "Lay Lady Lay" ; and "Like a Rollin Stone"...only they sounded different...rockier, with almost a country twang, and then the band backing him...
to be absolutely honest, i would have preferred to see him 30+ years ago, babyfaced and clear-voiced, no band--but i'll never get the image of his face out of my head! his eyes twinkle...
which Bob Dylan/Janis/Doors songs do you like?

I used to like a song Bob Dylan did years ago called Desolation Row. If memory serves, it was over 20 minutes long. I've also always really liked his version of "Just Like a Woman" although I like Roberta Flack's also so maybe I just like the song.
Janis Joplin had a version of "Summertime." It's been so long since I listened to her that I can't remember much else. The "disaffected youth" part of me really wanted her voice, and maybe some of her lifestyle also.
