Welll, it's good to be back again! I have spent the last 3 weeks in intensive therapy for my alcoholism and depression. And it wasn't that bad!
There's still a lot of work to be done but I have to take my hat off to therapists and psychiatrists now because my lot certainly know what they're doing! Feel much better but this is just the start.

That's great news- thanks for letting us know! And well done for your courage in starting the programme in the first place- I know that was tough.
Welcome back!

I'm so glad it wasn't as bad as you feared.
You have brought about a permanent change for the better here: the thread you started a few weeks ago - http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/social/20020112/msgs/17108.html - has developed during your absence into a thriving book club - http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/books/ .
Time to open the Nebuchadnezzar of Dom Perignon '82 we've been keeping to celebrate your triumphant return!
:) Jonathan.

I am so pleased to hear about the book club thing. I simply wanted to complain about the lack of humour in a book I was reading at the time but am delighted that it has taken on such a positive note now!

Congrats - I'm thinking about going to a residential treatment for compulsive overeating. I've abused alcohol, too, for many years. I'm scared to go and scared not to go. It's far, I don't know if I can do it, etc, etc. Any words of advice?

I was wondering about you...
I'm glad you're back and feeling better. Yes, it's a lot of work to get better and deal with alcoholism, but it's worth the efforts.
Keep the good work up!- sid

Hiya,
I was scared shitless about going onto this programme but it has turned out to the best thing I could ever have and will do. It was very nervewracking to begin with - sat in a group with random people, having to talk about your life secrets and stupid behaviour through drinking. But the point is that they're all done the same and much worse so no-one is there to judge you. It's all just about help and support.
The group I was with are now my closest friends and we have really helped each other through this horrible time in our lives. At the end of each sessin we say the following and I find that it really helps:
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can and wisdom to know the difference.
Keep coming back, it works if you work it, it won't it you don't.
Basically, these programmes are there to help us and if you allow yourself to admit that you're powerless over your addiction because it now controls your actions, then it will work for you as well.
Good luck.
This is the end of the thread.
