Valentines/Mania Reality Check!

Posted by Mr. Scott on February 13, 2002, at 21:13:11

Okay, so I work with a lot women (130+) and I interact frequently with about 20 of them. I wanted to get a white carnation for a few that I am good friends with..then I thought well... I know of a few more that might be pissy or offended and I don't want that, so I got all 20 of them little flowers with one of those little cards that says happy valentines day! (No Red Juicy Roses or anything mind you)

Just trying to be a nice guy, and yes of course since I'm single now my reputation as a swell guy is important to maintain, but I'm questioning myself since I'm used to being too depressed to drool let alone hand out flowers.

Does this make me a flaming psycho entering a hypomanic phase (If I ever really get hypomanic, this is as far as it goes!)

Whaddya think?

Scott, all I can say if this classifies you as a "flaming psychotic entering hypomanic phase" it would sure be nice if there were more around like you - both male & female.

What a sweetie, you are! Me, I'm just being real cynical about the commercialism of every flipping holiday there is making anyone who doesn't spend lots of money seem like a loser. I hate the pressure put on people to spend, spend, SPEND whether they feel like it or not. But really - you are a sweetheart!

That was a great link ISO! And thanks for calling me a sweetie too!

I am usually not a willing participant of such nonsense holidays either... But it does provide a nice forum for those of us singletons to at least flirt a bit. I spent ten times as much last year when I had a girlfriend...

Actually this is funny...After we broke up, a few months later she called to say I owed her because she had kept returning my gifts to the catalog I ordered them from (Sundance) for something else and never was quite satisfied. Well it was April already and she was still returning and re ordering stuff when we broke up. LOL! she ended up with no gift at all.. LOL!

All I want from this V-day is more and better friendsand a little exposure after being in a cave for so long... I keep telling people it will be A LONG TIME before I get serious with anyone again. Five years went by real quick with only a few pictures and a bunch of memories to show.. But I really can't complain about those things..

I know the feeling - it's over & you wonder what actually went on underneath the surface. My mouth dropped open when I read your post. I cynically 'know' that people are that shallow (as your ex-girlfriend) but it never ceases to amaze me what some will do.

I'd been married 24 years when my ex- decided family responsibility was too much for him, (what responsibility? He spent money on himself not us) & he left. I breathed a long sigh of relief. His idea of a gift was a chocolate bar. He came back from a convention one day with some cheap give-away promo items for us, including a calendar. Great gifts, hey? And I'm one of the most unmaterialistic people I know. I'm happier shopping second hand than spending lots on new items. You can also find more interesting rare articles second hand. :-)

Anyway, I don't want to sound like I'm whining. Happy Valentine's Day, sweetie! I get to work tomorrow with all the floral arrangements (Happy! Happy!) that are done for the holiday. (Sheez! You'd think they'd sell roses in other colours than pink & red but the chain I work for seems to only stock those colours on Valentine Day.)

I absolutely agree!
You shouldn't be so hard on yourself Scott.
Just because you're far sweeter and kinder and probably more
generous then the average guy that doesn't necessarely imply you're hypomanic or something like that!
I can relate to your worries though, as i often find myself wondering about that too since i love making presents myself: it's a way to show my affection to somebody (man or woman) who's have been kind to me.

That is funny about the gift, sad in general though. I feel sad in general for the people who cannot hookup with someone who is really the one for them in all ways. I guess that's most people. Probably wouldve been me if I hadnt gotten lucky. :)

Peace on this day to all!
Just dont worry, be happy!!! ;-)

Scott,

What a wonderful thing to do for your co-workers! No, that doesn't count as hypomania, unless you included a note with *each one* that suggested getting together for a hot tub after work today. THAT would qualify as hypomania! ;-)

Happy Valentines Day to all the wonderful people on PsychoBabble, including our beloved and beleaguered Dr. Bob.

With appreciation for each of you,

Mark H.

I had a rather fun time at work tonight. Got to wrap up flowers for customers & put ribbons on them plus a little of my normal work. As the closing time drew near, I also got to gather up all those shiny cellophane balloons with cheesy messages on them & walk around giving them to little kids. That part was really sweet. I'd ask if they'd like a balloon & when they hesitated, I'd assure them it was free. Even got a kiss from a little Chinese girl!

Sure I'll be your cyber-sweetie - no flowers or fancy gifts expected or wanted. I'm too cynical for that. Cynical but still cheerful as all get out.

If I could have posted a box of chocolates I would have!

Valentines Day actually sucked for me! Started off with a good attitude, but it was ruined quickly by events that took place at work unrelated to Valentines Day. Oh well!
