Mood Music

Posted by Sourceror on November 29, 2001, at 18:19:13

I have found that while I was in the hospital and while attending a partial day program that when they would play that soothing "mood music" that it would have an exact opposite effect on me. I would find myself getting enraged and pissed off.Has anyone else had this reaction or am I just odd???

You are not odd. The very same thing happens to me. I picked up some of those "relaxation" cd's once and popped them in one night when I was feeling really uptight and anxious. Well, the anxiety turned slowly into freaky rage. I just wanted to punch holes in walls and I didn't have a clue why. I have noticed since, that it happens everytime that kind of music is playing, even if it's just in the 'background' I get a little nutty when that "option" is even mentioned to me if I'm anxious or upset. It's quite a trigger for me.
I'm sure you'll get other responses too. I don't think you're alone in this one.

If its that hideous kind of knockoff song taking every ounce of musicality out of the original. I rather listen to a jackhammer chorus..2 hours, no problem. Just don't play like a choir of pre-pubescent boys singing something like Song Sung Blue. Vomit.
Massage music I like.

eh. it just puts me to sleep. i dont particularly hate it or like it. but i can understand getting a rage from that- i get rages from the weirdest things. but thats an off topic rambling. but no, i dont think your alone on this. i think theres either something subconscious or subliminal that triggers the rage in 'abnormal' rage i.e. mood music or non violent cartoons (in my case)

the second time i was hospitalised we had "music therapy" in which we had to lie on gym mats and listen to the aforementioned mood music with a "soothing" voice over it that said things like Strethc Your Toes and Imagine Dew-Tipped Flowers.

music therapy really pissed me off.

I find that I get more relaxed when I listen to angry aggressive music. For a while I couldn't figure out why, but then it occurred to me that the music is an outlet for my own anger (not that I do anything while listening, I just listen), and it seems that hearing the anger expressed by the music somehow also releases some of my own anger. I can't recall being irritated by soothing music, except by that awful stuff they play on the phone sometimes (yeuch), but maybe it feels like it is forcing you to be calm and relaxed, when you don't feel that way, maybe it feels kind of oppressive. It's possible it would make me feel that way if I was in an angry kind of mood. Which is a lot of the time, I'm afraid...

I agree with you and everyone else that's posted on this topic. I think I would BECOME suicidal if I were someplace where I were forced to do that sort of music "therapy"! Sounds like that "Far Side" cartoon where the devil is showing a conductor into his cell. "You'll be in here, Maestro"--a room full of insane banjo players. (Actually, I have nothing against banjo, but forced listening of anything is god-awful.)

It's the "easy-listening" music that I can't stand; it's too sugary for me. I can listen
to meditation music, but not the "easy-listening".
