The television show "60 Minutes" had a segment on tonight about a woman whose health insurance refused to pay for a life saving kidney transplant for her. Of course, that's atrocious and I felt sympathetic toward her, but I couldn't help thinking - how is her situation different from someone suffering from major depression and wants/needs to see a psychiatrist? I carry mental health insurance, but my carrier refuses to pay for therapy because I don't see someone on their list. Actually, I would have wanted to, but there was no one within about 20 miles of me. And believe me, this was definitely a life threatening illness I had. So I continue to pay out of pocket, but for many people this is simply not an option. If mental illness didn't have the stigma it does, the general public wouldn't stand for this kind of discrimination from insurance companies. Any thoughts?

I just had to get mine in too- 113.2 miles each way. But since I have a dissociative disorder, it's like I'm there in a flash ;-)- judy

stigma or no stigma, i think that the insurance companies would continue to seek their profit at the expense of humanity, and i think that whether the people stood for it or not, the insurance companies would continue to get away with it.
it's an interesting historical note that one of the only industries to actually "thrive" during the great depression of the early 1900's was the insurance industry.
