Gabapentin for mood swings?

Posted by scerena on October 19, 2000, at 20:46:21

My doctor diagnoised me with "Tramatic Strees Syndrome" and of course depression. I have severe mood swings and tend to loose time. Has anyone taken this drug for any of the these symptons? If so how do you feel? Happy or numb? Any information you give will be appreciated.
Thank You
Nic

Nic,

I started taking Neurontin (Gabapentin) for mood swings about 8 days ago and I've experienced a dramatic improvement in my mood. I have Bipolar II (rapid-cycling) and can be dancing thru the house one minute and biting someone's head off the next. I feel more relaxed and able to concentrate better. It has also helped me to sleep a little better. My current dose is 300 mgs in the morning and 600 mgs at bedtime. Happy or numb? DEFINITELY happy! :^) I should probably mention that I also take Zyprexa, but the Neurontin was prescribed specifically for my mood swings. If you end up using Neurontin please let me know how it works out for you. Hope this helps a little.

BTW, are you new to the board? If so, welcome to Babble!

Peace,
Greg

Thanks, Greg. I just started Neurontin yesterday (100 working up to 300 by tomorrow). How fast did you work up to your current dose? I'm glad you feel better. I hope it works as well for me.

allison,

I started the Zyprexa first, 2 days later I added 300 mgs in the pm of the Neurontin, after 2 more days 300 mgs in the am, then 300 more in the pm after two more days. Does this sound as confusing as it looks? Anyway 300 in the morning, 600 in the evening. My pdoc says it's important to titrate up over a period of days to help avoid heavy fatigue. It's really working great, I hope it works well for you too. Let me know OK?

Greg,

Thanks. That helps. I took 200 last night and another 100 this morning just because... I'll take 300 tonight. I see my doctor again on Tuesday and suspect he will up it again. Interesting you went up in 300mg increments vs. my 100.

I'll let you know what happens and you do the same!

Take care,

Allison
