Self portrait, November 1999

It was something I wanted to say
but not here
in this coffee shop
with this leather shoe crowd
sitting so close we
could read each
other’s minds--
I’m not paranoid
(any more)
it just isn’t
private

private public

I form the two words
slowly around my lips
as they bob in the surf
of the passing idea.
A continent rises
dripping, newborn,
separating a part
of myself from the rest--
I do not want their
misguided ears
on my mouth.
My experiences
are not
to be batted around,
like mice;
they are my own
once again.
