Damned manic spending!

Posted by NikkiT2 on October 10, 2000, at 8:01:55

OK. I knew my spending was a little crazy, but I keep getting these manic times, and spending like mad. Just called the bank to sort out something to do with getting cash for my holiday, and they've kinda let me see how bad my situation is... I'm £15k in debt... And thats UK pounds, so like, 22k in US$'s... They've taken my credit cards away, taken my debit card away and my cheque book. I guess I'm gonna have to own up to my husband about all of htis now.. but how?? After months of saying everything is OK, how do I now go and tell him I'm 15k in debt??

Sorry, just needed a rant. I'm fed up of being ill, an djust damn well want to be normal.

Rant over!!

Nikki

Nikki, I feel for you and can relate (although my problem's not as serious as yours, YET). I've been overspending for six months now and it scares me. The fact that you realize it's a problem is a good start, I think. Have you talked with your pdoc about the overspending? It's OK to rant here (people rant all the time).--Cindy W

Hey Nik,

You, me and Cindy should all go shopping together sometime, we could all live in the poor house together (I get the big bedroom)! You should have seen me weekend before last, $1900 on TV equipment...and I didn't even need it. DOH!

XXOO,
Greg

Greg, maybe we could combine our efforts...you buy the electronic stuff, I'll buy the clothes, and Nikki can help with buying whatever else is needed! Seriously, I get tired of owing to everybody for things I really don't need (and not having room to walk because of the stuff I've acquired).

I've been going crazy with spending. I have a weakness for really nice sheets. A store nearby was having a great sale!! 380 thread count, egyption cotton. Dear god do not create such temptations. I know this has to do with issues of self-worth. I want to make myself feel "accomplished" by having everything I want. I want to feel better. I've also been doing early Christmas shopping just to justify spending money. I've been buying Christmas ormnaments even though I have so many, I don't know if I'll be able to fit them on the tree. Help.

The furniture is expensive enough, but then I'll see a couple of clothing stores and a shoe store and a bookstore and you can never have too many gadgets and the computer can always be upgraded and...

When i get manic i also spend--3,000 in one week (my student loans). I had to drop out of school again recently (due to the downward swing of the pendulum) so at least i can go back to work full time (as soon as i can get the dreads out of my hair and stop sleeping 20 hrs a day) and pay off debt. But i've tried to be good about this--i got rid of all my credit cards and i give most of my money to my boyfriend and then he gives me back a certain percentage per month so i can't go overboard and order all those neat peruvian sweaters that i want so badly ; ) --laural

I hear you. I have 3 checking accounts because it is the only way for me to manage my money: one for day-to-day (gas, food, etc.), one for monthly bills, etc., and one (ideally) for savings (I don't let myself have an ATM card for that one).

If I don't split up my day-to-day money from my bills, I have no hope of getting them paid. :)
