Do I really have borderline personality disorder?

Posted by Deneb on October 23, 2010, at 3:23:17

My pdoc has said I have borderline personality disorder, but was she really right? It would seem like I don't fit criteria anymore. I don't get suicidal now. I don't harm myself. I feel caring from others.

It almost seems like I only get symptoms when I am in a bad way. Other times I'm just fine. So, do I really have BPD?

Was pdoc wrong?

I thought BPD was a for life kind of thing?

As you probably know, BPD tends to become less and less severe as one gets older. To be diagnosed with it, you have to have at least five of the following:

Extreme fear of abandonment
Unstable relationships (people are all good or all bad)
Unstable self-image
Impulsivity (speeding, binge eating)
Suicidality
Emotional instability
Feelings of emptiness
Excessive anger
Transient paranoid thoughts

You may well not have it now. You could just have a few borderline traits. Most everyone would score a "yes" on one or more of these traits.

No, it's not a lifetime thing.

But I think it might be more helpful to think of patterns and motivations.

Do you think you still have patterns of behavior that don't contribute to your wellbeing?

Do you think you feel some of the emotions that Twinleaf described?

If so, then regardless of the technicalities of meeting the criteria, treatment would be helpful. If not, then it wouldn't be needed.

I don't meet five of the criteria, and I've never been diagnosed with BPD, but enough of the traits and feelings apply to me that I find the treatments for BPD helpful to me.
