last night, my partner, who is a survivor of childhood sexual and physical abuse, got very drunk while i was at a meeting and ended up on the floor of our bathroom. she had cut the top of her forearm with a razor blade. the cuts turned out to be "superficial" but they bled like crazy and i was terrified so i took her to the ER. they proved to be little to no help and appeared to never have seen a traumatized person before. they did give her a sedative and some fluids (she was dehydrated) but above and beyond that were really no help.
i guess what i'm asking is... what kind of help should she/i/we seek? we don't have a lot of money (both out of work and broke right now, darn economy!). what has worked for you, fellow babblers? and, almost more importantly, what has NOT?
any feedback would be appreciated.

I'm so sorry for both of you. I can imagine how hard this is.
I would start by looking for therapists specializing in trauma issues. Then see if you can find someone on that list who has a sliding scale. Usually pastoral counselors do, and a few others. Do you have any insurance?
Group therapy could also be a cost-effective option, but she probably needs individual first.

It sounds as if therapy might be a good idea. Some therapists provide therapy on a sliding scale. Perhaps you could call around at your community health centers?

I cannot believe the hospital didn't do a psych. evaluation!
That is the usual protocol.
This is the end of the thread.
