A parting gift

Posted by emmanuel98 on December 29, 2009, at 22:15:26

I have been seeing my T for five years.  We decided jointly to end therapy since I am so much better.  It has been an intense and profoundly transformative journey.  He's been wonderful to me, unfailingly loving and compassionate and committed.  I have two more appointments before we end (I'll still see him every couple of months for med visits).  I want to give him a gift, but don't know what to give him.  I have already given him things in the past including a decoupaged tissue box holder I made which he uses in his office and the manuscript of a memoir I'm writing.  What else can I give him to say goodbye?  I was thinking maybe a plant for his office, to signify growth and life.  But I don't know.  I'm bad at thinking of gifts.

I like symbolic gifts like that, so I think it's a good idea.

My gifts to my therapist have been few, but have been related to themes in therapy. The first one was a small abstract sculpture of a mother and child, the symbolism being obvious. The second was a pebble. Because we'd talked about my slow progress in terms of therapy being like the water in a stream acting on the rocks at the bottom, slowly smoothing and molding them.

If growth and life are gifts your therapist has given you, it makes perfect sense to me that you would want to give him something that embodies that.

Now here's something funny about my projections toward my therapist. I'm pretty sure he'd manage to kill anything alive in his office. He has many fine and useful qualities, but remembering to feed and water is not one I attribute to him.

So I think it's also a nice sign of trust in your therapist's nurturing abilities. :)

Sounds corny, but give him a nice key chain. Maybe an expensive engraved one. I am sure he will find a key to use it for. Maybe a cabinet he locks or the like. The point is, with a keychain he will always remember you because he will have it forever and remember you alot when he uses it.
