seeing 2 T's

Posted by tetrix on November 22, 2009, at 17:25:25

I have been considering seeing another T while keeping mine. I heard about him from friend's friend. He was described as some sort of oracle of wisdom and I thought I would give him a try.

Do you think I should mention that to my T, or first see him and see how the session goes?

Also do you think it is crazy to see two therapists, once a week, alternating T's?

The two T's are using completely different methods and I thought it would be an interesting experiment, what do you guys think?

My therapist always told me that he would not continue to see me under those circumstances.

When fate had another point of view and I did have the experience, I understood why. I spent half my time with him complaining about her. They were two horses pulling in different directions, and causing the cart to stall.

But other people have experienced it with no problem, so perhaps it was more that my therapist understood *me* well.

I saw two T's for over a year, but my first T encouraged me to find the second so I could work exclusively with someone on DBT/CBT. And the two T's stayed in touch, as needed.

I wouldn't do this though without telling my first T. Or are you thinking about trying out #2 with the idea of switching down the road? I think you should ask your first T about it before you go ahead, or at least give him/her a head's up. Being straightforward is so important in therapy.

I think that I first have the session with the new T and then tell my regular T.

I am not shopping for new T and I am planning on maybe staying with my regular, the new T works with completely different methods and I want to see if that would be helpful.

I am feeling stuck with my current T.. it is really frustrating

No, your T may put other considerations other than your own when giving you advice on a matter like that. Of course having more than one therapist at a time may be confusing.

There is absolutely nothing crazy about looking for another therapist if you think you can get better help elsewhere. Don't let your therapist tell you something you that you know is not true.
