Hi there!
I feel like I am going crazy. My symptoms come at dusk/night, under bright artificial lighting, in shopping centres/restaurants/clubs, in crowds, where there is lots of noise, or when I am having a face-to-face conversation with someone. And I don't know what to do about it! In these situations, I start to feel disconnected from my surroundings and extremely overwhelmed by all the sights and sounds around me. I struggle to have a face-to-face conversation with people during these times because things seem hazy and distorted. And I feel like I might lose control or faint any second. Is this derealization? I would love to hear from others as I really need to chat to someone who is experiencing the same things as I am, or can give me help and support.
Thanks so much

Hi Silky,
Did you read up on it, are you sure it is not depersonalization (not that I really know the difference)?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depersonalization
Wiki actually gives a pretty good overview with links to similar issues and cited resources in the bottom.
I don't know the brain chemistry behind it, but over my lifetime, I've experienced depersonalization about 5 times from severe anxiety or panic attacks, ranging from mild to moderate-severe. Do you have GDD?
Hang in there!

Reminds me of a severe panic attack had in a large store once. I had to get out they say flourescent lighting can bring on a panic attack. Do you suffer from them? Phillipa

The feeling like I might faint or lose control any second remind me of what used to happen to me - ONLY if I was driving on a multi-lane highway. I wondered at the time if it was the beginning of a panic attack (which I've never had).
This didn't happen EVERY time on the highway. It never happened unless I was the one driving the car. Eventually it stopped.

It's been 'known' for decades that fluorescent lighting is NOT good for us.
I had forgotten about it & went ahead & bought these new low-energy flourescent bulbs, then remembered that I'd been the one to replace my old type bulbs with 'full-spectrum' type bulbs!!

I didn't know that flourescent lights were known to be bad for us Kath. I've always been very sensitive to flourescent light--it makes me feel miserable, esp. working all day under it.
In college classrooms with tons of windows, they always flip those damn lights on--even on bright, sunny days. I always shut them off after asking if anyone would mind.
I do have them in my laundry room and recently needed to replace the bulbs that have been working for over 10 years. To make sure I bought the right type to replace, I put one in the backseat of my car so I could take it to the hardware store with me. Drove around like that for a few days before I learned they could explode.

Hi you :-)
Well, I guess I should say, that I remember it seeming like 'common knowledge' decades ago, that fluorescent bulbs weren't good for us & that if we worked where they had them, it'd be good to get full-spectrum lights for at home, etc.
I did read recently that if fluorescent bulbs break, they have mercury & one should be VERY careful cleaning up. There are online safety instructions available.
Sorry about your headaches. You're not the first person I've heard say that.
xoxo Kath
