Does a 'Chair Change' mean anything?

Posted by sharon7 on January 29, 2009, at 11:22:21

last ? today! It's cool to actually have people to ask these ?'s to. This is a ? I'm actually kind of afraid to ask.

For the first year of seeing my t, she sat across from me in one of those leather recliners with the ottaman. Pretty relaxed you could say. Now, and for the past several months, she has started sitting in her office chair from her desk, and never uses the other chair at all. This 'new' chair positions her just a little higher than me from where I'm sitting on my chair, and she's also a bit closer. Of course I have commented on this several times. A couple of times she said she changes chairs for her posterior's sake, and once she said she likes to be able to look at me dead on or something.

I have a bad habit of analyzing everything to death, and it could mean absolutely nothing, but just the fact that she never alternated between the two before, but now all of the sudden. Sometimes when I come in to her office, it appears to me like she was sitting in the other chair with her last client (but I could be mistaken about that as well!)

Im sorta afraid im going to hear that the whole chair switching thing is a 'tell-tale' sign that your t is about to dump you. Of course that is not a pleasant thought, but if this is some body language psychologist tactic that will eventually culminate in my being shoved out the door, I'd rather know about it. Of course that it's a sign she's going to abandon me WOULD be my first reaction to it, and that might be the case, but I guess I'm holding out hope it either means nothing or is her trying to get in closer proximity to me. (wishful thinking.) On the topic of proximity, we've never had any physical contact, and from what I've read on this site sounds like that's fairly common (although I would love to hug her.) She did touch me once, though, right before Christmas. I was leaving her office on Christmas eve and when she walked me out, she put her hand on my back and kind of rubbed it a little while she wished me a Merry Christmas. Well, needless to say I could have let her do that forever and she would never have to even talk to me again. Just do that! lol. Have you ever felt like your insides just turned into jello? The feeling that gave me made me wonder if my need for affection is behind my problems with substance abuse, cuz I remember thinking as I tried to hold on to that feeling of her hand on my back for as long as I could, "that was better than any drug in the world. (or banana split i've ever eaten, or pair of shoes I've bought!) LOL!

Could she had a phsical problem that necessitates a different chair? Maybe she just likes the new chair like a new outfit or something. I don't feel it has anything to do with you did you ask if she uses this chair now for all clients? Phillipa

Hey Phillipa. You're probably right. I'm just being paranoid (I hope!) To answer your ?'s, she did 'claim' the different chair helped her tailbone sometimes, and I don't know for sure where she sits with her other patients. I should just come right out and ask her if the new chair thing has anything to do with her getting ready to fire me. It's not like a ? like this would come as any surprise to her. Cuz that w/b the only reason I wouldn't like. As long as I knew it wasn't that, she could sit wherever she wants. Maybe she just needs to realize that I am so insecure right now, she might have to understand that ANYTHING practically I can construe into "you're leaving me" "don't leave me." LOL. There could be an empty coffee cup on the table and I deduct "that empty cup must be a symbol that we are at the BOTTOM (the END) of our time together! Oh my goodness. PLEASE don't let me get THAT bad! ha, ha !!

Thanks for your reply, phillipa Take care. (o:
