Anyone ever have two t's?

Posted by healing928 on July 26, 2008, at 13:20:49

I tlaked with my former t the other day. It was a great phone conversation. He has been so supportive through my "transition," and I realize all the anger I had at him was displaced. It is difficult for me to open up with him and always has been. I don't know how to tell him i want to go back to my other t.

THen i need to work on my dependency issues with my former t. Don't know if that should be worked on with the former t because the issue is with him...

I just wish i could have two t's for a while, and i know they both would probably be against it.

Yes, I have two--a regular T and a pdoc. I do therapy w/them both. It works out well, and my T and I have agreed that if we think it doesn't work, I will stop. My pdoc is male, and I have male issues that I can't let go of with my female T, but I wouldn't trade her for the world. Often we spend our time dissecting what happened with pdoc so I can "see" correctly.

They don't speak to each other; my pdoc has never expressed an interest.

Also, she is psychodynamic and he is more CBT. His approach has helped a lot.

It's complicated, but works for now.

Given the confusion you feel about your most recent former T, I think seeing him and your older former (and present) T would cloud a lot of issues and cause a lot of confusion and misplaced emotions.

My advice would be to discuss this desire with your current T, and try to understand why you want to do this. It seems to me to have some meaning, but not the obvious, surface meaning you might be attributing to it.

Just my opinion.

I have.

But the situation was somewhat different. My therapist had left, and I saw this one. When he was available again (not very available, but a bit available) I guess he didn't feel he had a real right to ask me to stop seeing her. And we worked it out in a way that she was an adjunct therapist.

Even so, it was not particularly helpful, I must admit. I saw why he was generally opposed to it. She was prodding on one direction, he was directing in a totally different direction. The mixed messages were not helpful.

I'm guessing at least one of them would have a problem with it, and force you to choose.

I do think it's worth exploring the idea with whatever therapist you choose.

I kinda have two Therapist. I have issues with my previous therapist, like the fact that I miss her, and can't be in therapy with her because she's thousands of miles away. But I still consider her as my therapist, even though I am seeing a new one here. And the new one is good about it. She knows that I miss the other one, so she isn't going to stop me from emailing or calling if I need to. I kinda made that clear, and she's okay with it.

I had the same thing my pdoc did theraphy with me the problem happened as the therapist was employed in the same building actually offices in the same section and my pdoc said one thing she said another you just made me remember that the t and I and my husband met with her and we loved her and the pdoc since I guess he was kind of her boss wouldn't let me see her anymore he wanted to counsel me by himself. So I did have a good T. Well she's long gone as that was at the beach and while there tried to find her as he got rid of that practice and couldn't find her. She was excellent and all three of us clicked that's unusual I think. Phillipa

I used to want that too. I felt having two therapists would meet more of my needs and thus my therapeutic relationship wouldn't be so painful. I guess I realized over time that I had to confront what was painful in my relationship with her, rather than try to avoid it by adding somebody else.

Also I don't even know if it would have worked. What I want from her, I'm going to want from her, because she triggers me in multiple ways. I don't know if that's similar to your situation or not, but I can definitely see that sometimes you have to work out certain issues with a certain person.
