any fans of Bob Newhart Show?

Posted by Happyflower on April 30, 2008, at 19:52:43

I got season one from Netflix and we watched it tonight, and it was hilarious! I didn't have to worry about it being inappropriate for my kids, good old fashion humor. I was too young to get the show when I was little but now being a psych student, it love it. I wish we had more shows like it.

I loved of Mr. Carlin... last time I watched the show it was an episode where Bob is on interviewed on a local morning news/talk program and the host turns from sweetness and light to an all-out attack on his profession.

"So you mean to tell me that you charge $xx and hour and you can't even guarantee your work?!!"

I don't know how realistic it is. When I was watching a marathon lately I remember being distracted a few times by thinking "Hey! He can't do that!"

But it is definitely funny. I love Bob Newhart in general, and this show in particular.

I've been watching it faithfully since it was part of Must See Saturday nights on CBS. :)

Hi Happyflower,

I loved the Bob Newhart Show. I remember an episode where Mr. Carlin sked for his records/notes and Bob gave him a file box. Mr. Carlin said something like I'll be back for the rest later.

I like the very first episode were he dealt with a group of people afraid of flying. He planned a trip to New York and was going to spend time with his wife there, until he found out that she was also afraid of flying.

I thought it was funny that with her, he said she was dumb for having irrational fears. And she asked if he told his clients that, and he said no, of course not. lol
I just love the real humor when writers had to really be funny and not rely on bathroom or sexual jokes to get a laugh. Even my kids were laughing so much. It was a good time.

He is one of the funniest human beings on this planet! He and Suzanne Pheshette were so wonderful together. She died recently and his statement was very touching.

You're right about the shows being wholesome and clean. I can still sit and laugh at Andy Griffith.....too bad that people have turned away from the good stuff. (When it actually took talent to make good t.v. and movies)

I am looking forward to experiencing nore shows as an adult. I need to laugh, and it is nice to rediscover these shows.

Hi Dinah,

No, I don't think it is a realistic view of therapy, but it does have some elements of truth in it. Beside if it was realistic, who would really want to watch it? Sometimes it is good to get away from reality and laugh. It is a good escape.

My T brought this show up recently and that is why I am watching it now because I forgot all about it. But my T thought it was funny at the end of the session, by standing up and saying, "time is up" He was laughing because he was slowing trying to wind down our session, but I didn't catch on right away and asked him why he seems distracted. lol

It also occurs to me that I got my mental picture of myself coiling around my therapist's legs from a deep down memory of Mr. Carlin doing something similar.

I love Bob Newhart and enjoy his Dr. Hartley, even if I can't totally stop my kneejerk reaction when his patients hang out at his house, or his wife gets involved in the group.

Dinah, you caused me to think about the movie that Bill Murray was in...he went to the T's house and wanted to live there. Was it, "What abuot Bob"? Did Dustin Hoffman play the T?

The older shows do fascinate me now. At least I can let my 9 year old granddaughter watch some of them. We can buy DVDs of the really old shows at a dollar store in Austin and she will watch them two or three times in one sitting. I love hearing the belly laughs.

To me that is what is so funny when is wife gets involved, it gives me a feeling that all of us have issues. I love it when he has issues.

When people find out I am a psychology student, they say, oh, I better watch what I say. I tell them everyone has issues, if they think they don't, they more than likely do!

Richard Dreyfus, I think. I haven't watched that movie for ages. Maybe I ought to rent it soon.

I love the old TV shows too. It's a shame that "old" on TV Land and Nick at Night is so much newer now. I find it kind of interesting to see which shows hold up over time. Bob Newhart was good in that it didn't make a lot of reference to current events, so it doesn't seem dated at all. (Except the clothes). I'm trying to get my son to understand the pleasures of Get Smart and Star Trek, and so far he seems to be a real fan of The Honeymooners. I should dig up a DVD of I Love Lucy for him to try. His taste in comedy runs toward the broad, at least at his current age, and I'm not sure he'd get The Bob Newhart Show. Maybe Newhart.
