psychoanalysis term...assistance please

Posted by B2chica on June 12, 2007, at 10:02:08

my old T used to use certain terms that i can't remember and i need some help figuring them out.

he was describing the thoughts that i would have.
*****
some thoughts felt like my own..coming from inside me.
others felt like they were not my own, coming from 'outside' me.
*******

these weren't hallucinations, i wasn't hearing voices, but the thoughts felt scary, like they weren't coming from me. they felt foriegn...

there were two terms, one for the "inside thoughts' and one for the 'outside thoughts'.

does anyone know these terms????

I can't think of them offhand! But I do know the terms you're talking about. I've seen it often in terms of OCD, where thoughts often appear intrusive and not thoughts that "belong" to me, if that makes sense.

I'll try to think of it.

I don't think this is it, but are you thinking of ego-syntonic and ego-dystonic? Syntonic means the thought fits in with the individual's sense of self and knowledge, while dystonic means that the thought seems foreign to them or is otherwise sort of "rattling".

I can't think of anything else at the moment, but if I do, I'll post again.

That's it!!! Thank you gg.

I had a total mental block and only "iatrogenic" kept coming to mind, although I know what that means and it's definitely not that.
