Book: On Being a Therapist

Posted by pegasus on June 6, 2006, at 8:46:31

I've been reading this book called "On Being a Therapist" by Jeffrey Kottler. I found it after doing some surfing in response to a recent babble post. It's fascinating! It's basically all about the autor's experiences as a therapist and supervisor to therapists. It's written as if he's talking to other therapists. There's a chapter called "Patients Who Test our Patience" and another one called "Lies We Tell Ourselves". I've so far found it really helpful in painting a more complete picture for myself of what a therapist must think and feel. A warning: it may not always be comfortable to read about what this therapist, and others that he quotes, say about the more negative aspects of their job and negative responses to some clients and situations. But on the postitive side, it's great to hear about his genuine caring - even love - for his clients, and other redeeming things.

peg says, two thumbs way up.

I love Kottler. I have most of his books. I must say he moves too much for me to feel jealous of his clients. Have you seen his books where he compiles stories from different therapists? It can be scary to hear some of them.

No, I hadn't run across him at all before. I'm definitely going to read his other books. Especially the one about the master therapists' worst failures. I think it's called "Bad Therapy". I just love finding a new author to follow. :)
