Hi all,
I seem to be having some kind of phobia about illness. I seem to be constantly worried about soem illness or the other, and most of the times, the thing that I worry about seems very funny to myself.Any idea how to cure it myself? Don't want therapy for it.

I have to add, that it seems to be much worse when I am lonely. For the past two weeks I have been here pretty much by myself, and it is getting worse.

Well, I don't know about illness phobias, but I've had other obsessive fears. I find that it's always when there's something else going on in my life that is hard to deal with, and over which I have no control. So I seem to misplace my anxiety onto something that I can do something about. I suppose a therapist would try to help you find the real reason for the anxiety. But then I don't know what you do. I guess you have to face that? But the reason I misplace my fear is that the real reason is usually something I can't do anything about, so it makes me even more anxious.
Sorry I can only talk about the half I know.

My experience is the same as Pegasus. My OCD fears tend to have more reason than they'd appear to have on the surface. They're a distraction from what's really bothering me, they consume all my mind and worries, and they're easy enough to dismiss intellectually.
My inclination would be to try to figure out what was really bothering me. Or if that was too scary to allow myself to continue to have the fears, but with appreciation for all they're doing for me.

Of course, that's just my own experience and is in no way generalizable.

Thanks Dinah and Peg. I don't know if there is some other issue that I am trying to avoid by fearing about illness. I think I am just afraid of getting sick, having battled with rheumatoid arthritis for 10 years. And also perhaps because of my half *ssed knowledge of many medical things thanks to my father. I should just avoid reading more medical terms - but I seem to be so interested in medicine.
This is the end of the thread.
