A strange thing....

Posted by Meri-Tuuli on August 17, 2005, at 3:30:40

Hey guys, I'm sort of new to the therapy board, but I post mainly on psychobabble and alternative.

Anyway this is kind of crazy, but does anyone know what it means to doodle all the time instead of working, doing homework etc? I make these really elborate doodles when I am listening, for example, to a lecture or when I what to think about things. I have been doing them since I was 12 years old. Does it indicate ADD? Does it help activate a part of the brain that is used differently?

Any thoughts/ideas would be greatly apprecaited and solve a little mystery for me!

Take care

I would say you probably have a undiscovered artist talent! Maybe you should take an art class!

Are you bored? I found myself doodling while bored senseless. But I don't think I remember doing it while thinking.

My daddy did though, come to think of it. He doodled constantly and managed to keep up his end of a conversation and think besides.

I'm pretty sure he didn't have ADD. But he was awfully smart, and I think he got a bit impatient. Maybe doodling was his way of channeling excess energy?

Hiya guys!

Thanks for the responses. Actually I have done art until I was 18, but dropped it at college because it doesn't pay well. I guess I am artistic and scientific - I studied geology instead! Anyway i think I do it when at lectures etc because funny as it sounds, it keeps me focused...otherwise I will tend to day dream! Oh well maybe I'll never discover the reasons why......its just one of those things!

I doodle too.

I think it has to do with engaging the brain.

Y'know the thing about how the right brain is creative and the left brain is logical? If you are listening and drawing, you are using both sides of your brain, maybe, and perhaps in that way you absorb more info.

If you are interested in some real info, you could try googling "left right brain". There is also a book about learning to draw called "Drawing on the right side of the brain" that explains this.

I think it's interesting, not weird or strange. For some of us, it's "normal", whatever that means.

I find when I'm in a stressful situation,it can really help if I doodle. Like, when I talk with my mother on the telephone, and she is telling me the same story for the umpteenth time. If I draw while I am talking to her, and I don't mean a real, art-worthy drawing, I just mean doodle-draw, I can remain pleasant.

But I have no idea if it has anything to do with ADD. So far as I know, I don't have ADD.
