Hi:
Just wondering whether anyone has used this therapy for long standing depression, impulsiveness, suicidality, etc...
Never thought that at thirty-five I would still be struggling, but have decided to try this new therapy developed for Borderline Personality Disorder by Marsha Linehan. Sick of wearing the Prozac chastity belt! Feedback much appreciated.

Eugenia-
I say go for it! DBT is getting a great deal of support from both the academic and clinical communities. It teaches some very unique skills and seems to have a great effect for many. I led a DBT-based group at a local mental hospital, and was very pleased to see the (often profound) changes in many of my clients!
You may also wish to look into resources on schema-based cognitive therapy (big names are Jeffery Young and <Janice/Janet?> Klosko). This approach also has empirical support and is very compatible with other forms of psychotherapy.
My best!

Hello. I did a year of DBT (both individual therapy and group skills training) for the problems you talk about.
I found it hard (especially skills training), but found that it was really helpful with respect to improving my level of functioning, and reducing the amount of SI and number of days in hospital.
I think that it is definately worth a go!
Good luck. Keep us informed of what happens.

Skills training (group sessions) usually take 6 months to go through all the skills. We went through them twice over the course of the year.
There are a number of different phases in DBT. The first phase lasts for a year. We only got contracted for a year but Linehan didn't intend it to only last that long (phase two is supposed to be trauma work, for example).
Different providers may have different time schemes.
This is the end of the thread.
