Hi everyone,
This is my first post here at Dr. Bob...I have been in group therapy for 2.5 years now and individual therapy with the same therapist for 4 years. It has been a long journey, and eventhough I have made strides, I am still feeling "clinically depressed."
I have been seeing a cognitive therapist (in addition to my normal therapy) once a week, and I feel like it's helping...Are there any success stories out there with ct's that might be me fired up?

Hello and welcome to babble :-)
Cognitive therapy is not for me I'm afraid - I'm best not to go there really, but hopefully someone else may be having better luck with it and will post a follow up. It is good that you are finding it helpful.
What are you finding most helpful?

What I find helpful is that we talk about the here and now rather than speaking about why I am how I am. In traditional therapy I sit on a couch and talk about how my Mom did this and my Dad wasn't there and that's why I feel the way I do. That goes on and on, I know enough about my family to write a book, I need to gain life skills in the present to help feel less depressed and I feel like ct provides me that outlet....I also focus on what makes me feel good rather than what doesn't make me feel good (which is what I find myself talking about in traditional therapy). i have been seeing my normal therapist for 4 years now, I think that it's time for a new one.

Thats interesting. I have done maybe 7 years of cognitive behaviour therapy, but now I am sick to death of it. After a time it started to feel like we were so much in the here and now that I couldn't abstract from it enough to see the overall patterns that I keep repeating. Now I'm having psychodynamic therapy and for the first time ever I am starting to talk about my childhood experiences. It is interesting to me the notion that different people may be better suited to different styles of therapy and it is interesting to me that we both concluded that we needed a change.
Do you have two therapists at the moment - a cognitive one and a psychodynamic one?

Do they mind you seeing the other?
They don't say that you may find it 'confusing'?

The ct thinks that i I should stop seeing the couch therapist and the couch therapist didn't like the idea of me finding a new therapist, but has warmed to the idea...I hate my couch therapist but love my ct...

Could it be that the "couch" T is hitting on more sensitive issues? Since they would more likely dig a little deeper.

Though I think that different people want different things from therapy.
Some people want to be in it for the 'long haul', while others want practical help with practical problems and then they are able to move on just fine.
Good luck to you
And your right to choose
And well done for being able to figure it out :-)

they might be...ct's could be more of a quick fix, identifying my weaknesses and then throwing a band aid over them - where as a traditional therapist would help me realize why there was a wound to begin with. Putting a band aid helps to alleviate the blood rushing out of the wound, however, it's got to heal on it's own and a couch therapist is there for that...they are both helpful and i am finding the ct refreshing and it's giving me more hope, which is something that I have been lacking recently!
