I'd like my therapist to take more of an active role in helping me, i.e., not just listening and reacting to what I say but actually suggesting (proactively) ways in which I can better help myself. Any advice on how to approach this?

I think the only way to approach it is directly. Tell your therapist that at this point you need more him/her to take a more active role in helping you help yourself. You can't of course expect your therapist to give you the answers, but some therapists do do counseling as well as pure therapy. Your therapist may or may not feel comfortable with that approach. Have you thought about what you will do if your therapist doesn't feel able to counsel?
