For those of you following my saga, my therapist did in fact call. I bit my nails trying to decide whether I should just endure the pain and get over it or to call him. When he called, he didn't say anything about returning. I felt so relieved to just hear his voice that tears were rolling down my cheeks. As he was about to hang up, he said, "Anything else?" I knew this was my only chance. I quietly asked if I could return, and he cheerfully answered, "Of course you can!" I told him it would be very hard to face him after my dramatic behavior, and he said he would try to think of ways to make it easier for me.
I'm so relieved. I had already interviewed 2 new therapists on the phone, and the thought of starting all over made my skin crawl.

Thank you. But really? Your therapist, after 9 years of knowing you, would just let you disappear without closure? I think you may be underestimating his concern. Or, is this not an issue at all because you do not share my hysteria:)

Really. Speaking from experience. I quit a half dozen times at least in the first five years of therapy and while he generally asked me to come in for a final session, he never called if I didn't call first. Now if I didn't show up and gave him no explanation, he would call to make sure I wasn't ill or something. But if I told him I was quitting and didn't come in, he wouldn't call unless I called him.
Believe you me, I'm capable of being an hysteria champ.

Thanks for calling it courage. I've been feeling incredibly weak since that call, even though I'm relieved. I'll try to think of it differently. Thanks again!
