What is Group like?/I'm back!

Posted by cubic_me on July 15, 2004, at 8:41:07

I'm back from vacation and back online, yay!

I had therapy this morning which went pretty ok - we covered a lot of ground.

Quite a bit of the session was spent discussing the possibility of me going into group in a few months time. I really don't know whether I want to do it and whether it will benefit me.

At the moment the pros are:
~It will give me more perspectives on my situation
~It will be a change from individual therapy and may work better
~It will wean me off therapy gradually rather than suddenly stopping having any kind of therapeutic relationship

and the cons:
~I can't go to individual therapy if I go to group (because of funding/policy)
~I don't have the desire to talk to a load of strangers about myself (I like to choose who I disclose to, and I have people I can talk to outside group if I need to)
~I don't particulary have problems with interpersonal skills, relating to others etc
~I'll be much more interested in other people's problems than my own

So I'm confused. Any ideas of what I should do, or experiences of group would be really appreciated!

Hi cubic!

My experience with group has been that I wouldn't want to substitute it for individual therapy. You end up spending a lot less time on your own stuff, and more time thinking about other people's stuff. Which can be interesting and helpful. But I'm sort of a hider, and I found it really easy to hide in a group. Which meant that I rarely directly worked on my own stuff. Also, I had a lot of issues with the way my group leaders handled people, and I wasn't very good at speaking up. If I hadn't had an individual therapist to talk about things with, I would have found it very frustrating.

So, I think I'm saying that it depends on what type of person you are. But my experience leads me to say that I'd never want to be in a group only.

I hope this helps.
